En las últimas horas falleció David Galante Z´L, sobreviviente del Holocausto. Tenía 94 años. A los 18 años llegó al campo de concentración con su familia, que murió en manos de los nazis. Participó del ejército ruso y se escapó para venir a la Argentina. Nunca quiso borrar de su brazo el tatuaje que le hicieron en Auschwitz. Murió después de haber contraído coronavirus. Mucha tristeza en la comunidad.
David decidió viajar a la Argentina y rearmar su vida. Lo logró, y durante medio siglo no dijo palabra de lo que había vivido, no explicó el tatuaje en su brazo (B7328, un número de registro que le impusieron los nazis), ni buscó a otros sobrevivientes. No habló de su madre, de su padre, de su hermano… Pero un día, conversando con un rabino amigo, pudo contar. Desde entonces comenzó otra vida.
En una entrevista con Vis á Vis contaba lo siguiente:
«Hoy es un día muy triste para nosotros. Nos retrotrae a aquella época. Los recuerdos los tengo permanentemente, no los pierdo aunque pasen los años. El problema fue que durante 50 años no pude hablar, y recién después de esos años pude contar y transmitir lo que había sucedido».
– ¿Le hizo bien en lo personal poder contarle al mundo lo que había sufrido?
– Claro que me hizo bien. Nosotros pensábamos que nos iba a hacer daño, y además algunas personas nos aconsejaron que no habláramos por que era dañino, pero fue al revés. A medida que pasaba el tiempo cuanto más contaba mejor me sentía.
– ¿Qué personas le decían que era mejor no contar la historia?
– En general la gente. Fueron cosas muy brutales y uno no estaba en condiciones física y psíquicas para contar lo que había sucedido. Cuando vinimos del campo estábamos medios trastornados, entonces poco a poco comencé a trabajar y a formar familia, y ahí se fue normalizando todo hasta que uno volvió a ser uno mismo. Durante mucho tiempo no sabía donde estaba, ni lo que era.
– Luego de haber vivido una situación tan traumatica como la que le toco pasar, ¿qué aprendió?
– Aprendí que el mundo, la humanidad, todavía no maduro. El mundo hizo cosas contra la humanidad . Lo que hicieron los nazis fue un agujero negro contra la humanidad. Nosotros tenemos que luchar para tratar de transmitirle al mundo las cosas que sucedieron para que no se vuelvan a repetir.
– ¿Por eso es significativo evocar este tipo de fechas?
– Para nosotros es muy importante recordar este tipo de fechas por que tenemos que demostrarle al mundo las cosas que sucedieron. Cuanto más se habla, más gente conoce lo que sucedió, y de esta forma, hay menos probabilidad de que vuelva a suceder.
– ¿Por qué cree que el mundo no aprendió?
– No sabemos el porqué, aunque cada vez se ven cosas peores de lo que ha sucedido durante el Holocausto.
Pese a todas las tragedias a las que fue sometido, David debe ser recordado como uno de los hombres más adorables que hemos conocido.
Permanecerá por siempre en mis recuerdos.
