A la edad de seis años, Ben-Zion Hadar, conocido como «Bulush», tuvo que vender cigarrillos junto a sus amigos en Varsovia para sobrevivir al Holocausto. Ayer (domingo), murió a la edad de 84 años. Era el más joven del grupo de niños, cuya historia inspiró la publicación de un famoso libro llamado “Vendedores de cigarrillos de la Plaza de las Tres Cruces”. El funeral de Hadar, que había sido hospitalizado recientemente en el hospital Hillel Yaffe, en Hadera, se celebró ayer por la tarde en el cementerio de Zichron Yaacov. Le sobreviven una esposa, Orit, dos hijos y una hija.

Durante su infancia, la hermana de Hadar solía ayudarlo a salir clandestinamente del gueto a través de aberturas de drenaje para llevar algo de pan a la familia.

A los seis años logró escapar de allí por sus propios medios. Se dirigió solo a la casa de un polaco que había conocido antes, donde se encontró con un grupo de niños que se convirtieron en sus hermanos. Para ocultar sus identidades, decidieron no hablar más en ídish entre ellos.

Decidieron vender cigarrillos cerca de la sede de la Gestapo en Varsovia, pensando que nadie sospecharía que eran judíos.

La historia de “Bulush”, que logró con gran ingenio sobrevivir con sus amigos, fue revelada en el famoso libro «Los vendedores de cigarrillos de la Plaza de las Tres Cruces». El autor del libro Joseph Ziemian, pertenecía a la resistencia polaca contra los nazis y ayudó a los jóvenes en aquella época.

Hace aproximadamente un año, el periodista israelí Yigal Mosko entrevistó a “Bulush” en Hahadashot 12. En el reportaje, Hadar contó que vivió como una aventura la dura vida en aquellos días.  Además de la brutal batalla por su vida que tuvo que librar siendo un niño. «Entendí todo a la edad de seis años, cuando escapé del gueto», dijo Hadar. «Creo que entendí más que los adultos, que se engañaban a sí mismos creyendo que podían salvarse. Sólo había muerte allí», agregó.

En la entrevista, Bulush describió, entre otras cosas, cómo solía cantar debajo de las ventanas a cambio de la comida que le arrojaban los polacos. «‘Vendedores de cigarrillos de la Plaza de las Tres Cruces’ es el nombre que se le dio a ese grupo de niños. Vivían como una pandilla callejera en el lado ario de Varsovia, después del exterminio en el gueto».  Así lo explicó la profesora Havi Dreyfus, de la Universidad de Tel Aviv y el museo Yad Vashem. La docente se especializa en el Holocausto de los judíos polacos.

«La supervivencia de un grupo de niños judíos en el centro de Varsovia, que estaba lleno de soldados alemanes, fue posible no solo por el coraje de esos jóvenes, sino también por su impresionante solidaridad, que se expresó en su preocupación por ‘Bulush’, que era el más joven del grupo».

Zvi Ziv, un amigo cercano de “Bulush”, dijo que Hadar mantuvo un estrecho contacto con algunos de los miembros del grupo. Estaban esparcidos por todo el mundo después de la guerra. Uno de los niños, Peretz Hochman, falleció en 2013. Ignaz Milchberg, el líder del grupo, que logró proteger a los niños, emigró a Canadá después de la guerra y murió en 2014.
