Durante más de una década, el emblemático edificio Schneller de Jerusalén en la calle Malkei Israel estuvo cerrado y abandonado. No obstante, ahora vive una renovación masiva antes de convertirse en el Beit HaKehillot (Casa de las Comunidades), un museo interactivo del patrimonio judío y centro cultural.
“Este no será otro aburrido museo lleno de artefactos que olvidas después de diez minutos. Va a ser una celebración de la cultura judía que emocionará a los visitantes que se sienten parte del pueblo judío”, expresó Hanan Benayahu, director del Instituto Kehillot Israel.
El directivo le contó a ISRAEL21c que el futuro museo tiene como objetivo dar vida a eventos históricos y folclore inspiradores. Los mismos que representen “las ideas radicales y los valores centrales que los judíos trajeron al mundo a lo largo de la diáspora”. «Y cómo esas ideas y valores unieron y fortalecieron a las comunidades extendidas», agrega.
“Su cultura no era solo el pescado y el cholent. Durante 2000 años, los judíos se conectaron e influyeron de forma mutua, y hallaron maneras de manejar todo tipo de situaciones, no solo el antisemitismo sino también cuestiones como la llegada de la modernidad”, explicó Benayahu.

Durante los últimos 50 años, Kehillot Israel recopiló lo que, según Benayahu, hoy compone l archivo privado más grande de manuscritos, cartas, libros, canciones e historias originales vinculadas al judaísmo.
De forma digital, el instituto documentó casi dos millones de páginas, certificados y documentos históricos, y publicó más de 700 libros.
“Todos tenemos raíces de diferentes comunidades, pero ¿tenemos alguna idea de cómo conectarnos con esas raíces? Poder experimentar la riqueza de cada comunidad (costumbres, literatura, poesía, música, liturgia y cuentos populares) creará un sentido de conexión, sin importar de dónde venga su familia”, manifestó el titular del museo.
Una cápsula del tiempo de la historia
El misionero protestante alemán Johann Ludwig Schneller construyó el primer edificio del complejo homónimo en 1860 para cuidar a los huérfanos sirios.
El campus se expandió de forma gradual hasta incluir una escuela para ciegos, varias fábricas, una imprenta, un taller de alfarería, dormitorios, establos y más.
En 1940, las fuerzas británicas deportaron a todo el personal alemán. A su vez, convirtieron el recinto en un campo militar cerrado que contenía la mayor reserva de municiones de Oriente Medio.
El edificio volvió a cambiar de manos en 1948 luego de que los británicos se retiraran de la región.
La Haganá, precursora de las Fuerzas de Defensa de Israel, uso el complejo como base de operaciones durante la Guerra de Independencia de Israel. Hasta 2008, las instalaciones continuaron al servicio del Ejército.
Mientras tanto, alrededor del recinto se descubrió una casa de baños, una bodega y otras estructuras que datan de la época del Segundo Templo y del período romano temprano.
El trabajo de restauración y excavación dentro del complejo reveló evidencia de una casa de baños turcos y varios pozos antiguos.
“El complejo Schneller es una cápsula del tiempo virtual de un período de 150 años en la historia de Jerusalén. Contiene la historia del pueblo judío desde el momento de la destrucción de Jerusalén, hasta el pre-Estado, los británicos, la clandestinidad y más. Este nuevo proyecto, ubicado en lo que antes era un edificio no judío, honra la herencia judía y su cultura para cerrar el círculo”, afirmó Moshé Shapiro, arquitecto principal del proyecto.
Se estima que el proyecto de construcción se complete en cerca de dos años.
Para todo tipo de público
El museo es diseñado por el estudio Berenbaum Jacobs Associates (BJA), que crea instalaciones digitales, contenido de video original y experiencias avanzadas de realidad aumentada y realidad virtual para museos, exposiciones especiales, atracciones para visitantes y monumentos conmemorativos en todo el mundo. La firma tiene oficinas en Israel, Nueva Jersey y California.
Edward Jacobs, socio de BJA y diseñador del proyecto, le contó a ISRAEL21c que el diseño se centrará en atraer a los visitantes en edad escolar “que quieren entender por qué un museo de herencia judía es relevante para sus vidas. La tecnología de vanguardia es solo una parte de eso”.
La idea es que todos los tipos de visitantes del museo pasen y experimenten los diversos elementos al nivel que cada uno desee.
Beit HaKehillot ofrecerá gafas de realidad aumentada en lugar de auriculares. “Odio los auriculares porque eliminan el elemento social sumamente importante de experimentar el espacio juntos”, manifestó Jacobs, que imagina que el viaje comenzará con el acceso a través de un “enorme ascensor loco con paredes de cristal líquido” que conducirá a una antigua cisterna de agua donde una película presentará “todos los ideales radicales promulgados por primera vez por los judíos, como la igualdad humana y el medio ambiente como parte de la conciencia”.

Museos complementarios
Benayahu explicó que Beit HaKehillot complementará -y no competirá- con el Museo del Pueblo Judío (Beit Hatfutsot), anteriormente llamado Museo de la Diáspora, en el campus de la Universidad de Tel Aviv, que se inauguró en 1978 como el Centro Nacional para las comunidades judías en Israel y en todo el mundo.
Otro proyecto en proceso es el Museo Judío del Mundo, que se espera que abra en 2023 para destacar los principales logros judíos en la historia moderna.
Diseñado por el arquitecto judío de renombre mundial Frank Gehry, ese espacio propondrá convertirse en un punto de partida para una “Avenida de los Museos” -como el Museo Mile en Nueva York- que contendrá el Museo Eretz Israel, el Centro Rabin y el Museo Palmaj, Beit Hatfutsot y el Museo Steinhardt de Historia Natural.
