El exespía Jonathan Pollard llegó a Israel desde EE. UU., poco más de un mes después de que su libertad condicional terminó y quedó libre de toda restricción judicial tras 30 años en prisión. Lo recibió en la pista de aterrizaje el Primer Ministro Benjamín Netanyahu quien le entregó su pasaporte. Al bajar del avión, Pollard y su esposa besaron el suelo israelí y saludaron a Netanyahu.
El periódico israelí Israel Hayom informó que Jonathan Pollard aterrizó la madrugada de este miércoles (tiempo local) en el Aeropuerto Ben-Gurión de Israel.
Según relata el reporte, previo al aterrizaje, a Jonathan Pollard lo invitaron a la cabina de pilotos del avión donde se le concedió el honor de escuchar a la torre de control en el aeropuerto, que le dio la bienvenida y saludó en hebreo.
Jonathan Pollard, que partió desde Nueva Jersey, viajó en un vuelo privado debido a la condición médica de su esposa Esther, quien padece cáncer, informó Enlace Judío.
Por medio de su cuenta de Twitter, Boaz Bismuth, editor en jefe de Israel Hayom, publicó este martes una fotografía de Jonathan Pollard junto a su esposa Esther con cubrebocas abordo del avión. En la toma se aprecia una pantalla que muestra el vuelo de la aeronave a medio mar Mediterráneo.

La libertad condicional a la que estaba sujeto Pollard desde el año 2015 llegó a su fin el pasado viernes 20 de noviembre, con lo que el exespía quedó finalmente libre tras pasar previamente 30 años en prisión por espiar a EE. UU. para Israel en los años 80.
Poco después de quedar en libertad, el primer ministro de Israel, Benjamín Netanyahu, exhortó a Pollard y a su esposa a mudarse desde Nueva York a Israel.
Netanyahu les dijo a Jonathan y Esther: “Los estamos esperando, incluso en esta época de coronavirus con los brazos abiertos. Recibirán de nosotros un verdadero abrazo del pueblo de Israel. Me alegro de que su pesadilla haya terminado. Y pueden regresar a casa, a Israel. Eso será en verdad un gran momento”.
El coronel Aviem Sella, de la Fuerza Aérea de Israel, en ese entonces en Washington, fue la figura que contactó a Pollard con las autoridades de inteligencia israelíes.
Bajo supervisión de una unidad de inteligencia del Ministerio de Defensa de Israel, Jonathan Pollard espió y entregó documentos clasificados de EE. UU. a Jerusalén.
Oficiales estadounidenses, algunos de los cuales consideran muy graves los detrimentos causados por Jonathan Pollard a la inteligencia norteamericana, creen que parte de la información obtenida por él terminó por causas desconocidas en manos de la Unión Soviética, luego de ser transferida a Israel.
En 1985, Jonathan Pollard y su entonces mujer Anne Henderson, que también se había involucrado en actividad de espionaje, fueron descubiertos por las autoridades estadounidenses.
Dos años después, Pollard fue sentenciado a cadena perpetua por un tribunal estadounidense por delitos de espionaje. La misma la purgó en una cárcel en Carolina del Norte. El derecho a solicitar libertad condicional se le concedió hasta que cumpliera 30 años tras las rejas.
Israel reconoció años después haber coludido a Jonathan Pollard en acciones de espionaje y exhortó a EE. UU. de manera continua por su liberación. En 1995 le otorgó la ciudadanía israelí a Pollard.
