Ha sido un día diferente a cualquier otro en la historia moderna de EE.UU.: una turba irrumpió en el edificio del Capitolio, destrozó oficinas y tomó el estrado en el piso del Senado. Los legisladores tuvieron que encerrarse. Al menos una persona recibió un disparo y falleció.

La Policía del Capitolio evacuó a los miembros del Congreso que presenciaban la función ceremonial de contar los votos electorales, que un grupo de republicanos, encabezados por los senadores Josh Hawley y Ted Cruz, habían tratado de desviar. El presidente Donald Trump, que aún se niega a aceptar su derrota en las elecciones, había instado a los manifestantes a marchar hacia el Capitolio.

El nuevo Congreso tiene al menos 33 miembros judíos, en la Cámara y el Senado. También hay cientos de empleados judíos, aunque la pandemia hace que muchos trabajen de forma remota.

“Tuve que evacuar mi oficina debido a una bomba reportada afuera, mientras los anarquistas del presidente están tratando de entrar por la fuerza al Capitolio”, tuiteó Luria, una demócrata de Virginia recientemente reelegida para su segundo período. “Escuché como una especie de disparos de arma de fuego”.

Luria, como prácticamente todos los demás legisladores, un puñado de líderes son la excepción, se encuentran en edificios adyacentes al Capitolio.

“No reconozco a nuestro país hoy y los miembros del Congreso que han apoyado esta anarquía no merecen representar a sus compatriotas estadounidenses”, dijo.

Otros dos judíos demócratas de Michigan se estaban refugiando juntos.

“Me quedo a salvo en mi oficina, al igual que mi personal al que se le indicó que se quedara en casa”, dijo Slotkin, un exanalista de la CIA. “El representante Andy Levin está conmigo desde que evacuaron el edificio de su oficina”.

Levin, cuyo padre es el representante retirado Sander Levin, publicó un video en las redes sociales para decir que estaba a salvo y sonrió al principio: todavía estaba empapado de las buenas noticias para su partido de que Raphael Warnock y Jon Ossoff habían ganado hoy en Georgia, dando con ello el control demócrata en el Senado.

“La alegría de eso se ha desvanecido en este momento, ya que estamos atravesando un asalto a nuestra democracia aquí mismo en el complejo del Capitolio”, dijo. “El presidente de EE. UU. ha alentado a sus seguidores a invadir el Capitolio”.

Representantes Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler, Kathy Manning y David Cicilline

Senador Jacky Rosen y Senador Brian Schatz

“Estas acciones son inaceptables”, dijo Kustoff. “Somos una nación de leyes, no una nación de violencia”.

Kustoff y Steve Cohen, un demócrata, comparten la distinción de ser miembros judíos cuyos distritos vecinos abarcan una ciudad entera, Memphis, con una pequeña comunidad judía. La mitad de la ciudad de Cohen es predominantemente negra. No contuvo su enojo en Twitter por lo que percibió como el trato moderado de la policía a los insurrectos.
