Francia se va a desprender del único «klimt», tras confirmar que la obra fue expoliada por los nazis a una familia judía austriaca.

La ministra francesa de Cultura, Roselyne Bachelot, afirmó que fue una decisión «difícil pero justa», al anunciar que Rosales debajo de los árboles, un óleo del simbolista austriaco de 1905 y expuesto en el Museo d’Orsay desde hace casi cuatro décadas, será restituido a los herederos de Nora Stiasny, que se vio obligada a venderla muy por debajo de su precio poco después de la anexión de Austria por la Alemania nazi.

“Es una decisión evidentemente difícil. Supone sacar de la colección nacional una obra maestra que es la única de Klimt de la que Francia era propietaria. Pero era una decisión necesaria, indispensable. 83 años después de la venta forzada de la obra, es la realización de un acto de justicia”, dijo Bachelot.

La restitución no será inmediata, puesto que requiere un cambio normativo. Al tratarse de una obra que forma parte de las colecciones nacionales, está protegida por ley por su calidad de “inalienabilidad”. No obstante, aseguró Bachelot, “el Gobierno presentará en cuanto sea posible un proyecto de ley” que permita la salida de la pintura de las colecciones nacionales y, por tanto, su devolución a sus dueños originales, la familia judía austriaca.

El Museo d’Orsay, por su parte, adquirió la obra en 1980 en Zúrich sin que en la época hubiera sospecha alguna de su procedencia dudosa.

Los coleccionistas austriacos Viktor y Paula Zuckerkandl consiguieron la obra de Klimt, titulada en aquel entonces Pommier. Y se la legaron a su sobrina, Nora Stiasny. En agosto de 1938, unos meses después del Anschluss austriaco (unión forzosa con Alemania), esta se vio obligada a venderla a un precio mucho más bajo que el del mercado, antes de acabar deportada junto a su madre a Polonia, donde fue asesinada en 1942. También su marido e hijo fueron víctimas del Holocausto.

Además, la pista de la venta forzada del cuadro se “perdió” con los años y en 1980 la adquirió Francia para que formara parte de la colección del Museo d’Orsay, que abrió sus puertas en París seis años más tarde.

Las pesquisas comenzaron en julio de 2018. Allí, Austria informó a Francia de que nuevos documentos permitían establecer que el cuadro de Klimt era probablemente una obra expoliada en Viena antes de la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
