«El Monte del Templo no debe usarse para actos violentos que amenacen a los fieles judíos y musulmanes», dijo el martes el presidente Reuven Rivlin en una sesión informativa de emergencia para los embajadores de los estados miembros de la UE en Israel.

“No permitiremos la violencia y la alteración del orden”, dijo Rivlin. “Los extremistas palestinos han convertido el Monte del Templo en un escondite de armas y una base para ataques”, dijo el presidente Rivlin.

Rivlin señaló que después de que Jerusalén fuera atacada con cohetes, se dispararon cientos de proyectiles más contra israelíes, enviando a miles de niños a refugios antiaéreos.

“Ningún país del mundo aceptaría una situación como esta. Nunca aceptaremos esta realidad. Protegeremos a nuestros ciudadanos por todos los medios necesarios”, afirmó.

Entre los asistentes a la sesión informativa se encontraban el embajador de la UE en Israel, Emmanuele Giaufret, y los embajadores de Alemania, Italia, Francia y España, publicó Enlace Judío.

Rivlin mencionó que organizó una comida Iftar, rompiendo el ayuno diario durante el mes sagrado musulmán del Ramadán, para embajadores musulmanes y líderes locales.

“Todos saben que Jerusalén es una ciudad abierta donde personas de todas las religiones rezan libremente. Durante el mes de Ramadán, decenas de miles de musulmanes han rezado con seguridad en el Monte del Templo, como hacen durante todo el año”, dijo Rivlin.

Sin embargo, agregó, “las provocaciones, los ataques terroristas y la violencia de Hamas … han convertido el Ramadán en una pesadilla”.

Rivlin pidió asociaciones regionales con Israel, para generar confianza y entendimiento que conduzcan a la paz.

“No hay atajos. La paz no puede basarse en un papel. La paz no puede desarrollarse atacando a Israel en los órganos de la ONU. Tampoco dañando el derecho de Israel a defenderse en la Corte Penal Internacional. La UE puede desempeñar un papel vital en la promoción de la cooperación israelo-palestina en beneficio de todas las partes”, afirmó.

El lunes, un portavoz de la UE dijo que “el lanzamiento de cohetes desde Gaza contra la población civil en Israel es totalmente inaceptable y alimenta una dinámica creciente. Todos los líderes tienen la responsabilidad de actuar contra los extremistas”.

La UE pidió a Israel que reduzca las tensiones, y agregó que “el status quo de los lugares sagrados debe ser respetado plenamente”, instando a todas las partes a participar en esfuerzos de reducción de la escalada para evitar más víctimas civiles.

“El aumento significativo de la violencia en la ocupada Cisjordania, incluso en el este de Jerusalén, así como en Gaza y sus alrededores, debe detenerse de inmediato”, agregó el portavoz.
