Diego Schwartzman, surgido del club Náutico Hacoaj y número uno del tenis en la Argentina, recuperó gran parte de su nivel y se instaló en la tercera ronda de Roland Garros, el segundo torneo de Grand Slam del año, tras imponerse sin pasar sobresaltos sobre el esloveno Aljaz Bedene por 6-4, 6-2 y 6-4.
El argentino, de 28 años, había resuelto su compromiso de la ronda inicial ante el taiwanés Yen Hsun Lu también en sets corridos. Asumirá su próximo desafío ante el alemán Philip Kohlschreiber (132), que hoy despidió al ruso Aslam Karatsev (26) con un marcador de 6-3, 7-6 (4), 4-6 y 6-1.
El «Peque» Schwartzman, décimo en el ranking mundial de la ATP, empleó dos horas y 20 minutos para doblegar a Bedene. En un partido en el que mostró haber recuperado el nivel que no tuvo en la gira europea previa sobre polvo de ladrillo.
Comenzó algo impreciso su partido ante Bedene. Un rival con el que había perdido dos veces, en Nottingham 2015 y Buenos Aires 2018, con una victoria en el Argentina Open de 2019.
En el set inicial pudo ponerse en ventaja 3-0 y luego 4-1 pero cometió varios errores no forzados, aunque igual se llevó el parcial por 6-4.

El «Peque» tomó el control del partido a partir del segundo set. Con buen juego de contragolpe y tiros más profundos, al tiempo que Bedene acusaba molestias en la mano al punto que recibió atención médica, aparentemente por ampollas.
El argentino, quien carga con la presión de tener que defender los puntos que ganó con su acceso a semifinales en 2020 (perdió con «Rafa» Nadal, luego campeón por 13ra. vez), mantuvo la iniciativa en el tercer set ante un rival que prácticamente no lo incomodaba.
Schwartzman resolvió el partido cuando logró el quiebre que le permitió adelantarse 3-2, luego no falló con su servicio, resolvió el set por 6-4. Así mantuvo su buena racha de instalarse al menos en la tercera ronda en 11 de los últimos 14 torneos de Grand Slam que jugó.

Con la clasificación en el bolsillo, el argentino destacó el valor de su triunfo ante Bedene. «Era un rival difícil que ha complicado a muchos jugadores en Grand Slam. Y quizás si le daba una chance de volver se iba a poner peligroso».
Schwartzman asumió que deberá jugar un partido de «ocho o diez pelotas por punto» ante su próximo rival, Kohlschreiber, para seguir con vida en el segundo Grand Slam del año.
«Ojalá pueda hacer un buen partido contra él. Tengo que hacer todo lo que pueda hacer en el partido para que corra, para que vaya al límite…». Así analizó el argentino sobre el juego con el alemán, de 37 años, a quien elogió por su trayectoria.
