“Apenas sabíamos nada sobre Auschwitz”, dijo, relatando ese día en una entrevista en 2015 con Sueddeutsche daily. Y contó que vio «esqueletos por todas partes».

“Salieron tambaleándose del cuartel, se sentaron y se acostaron entre los muertos. Terrible. Les tiramos toda nuestra comida enlatada e inmediatamente pasamos a cazar a los fascistas”, aseveró.

Solo después del final de la guerra se enteró de la magnitud de las atrocidades en el campo.

De los seis millones de judíos asesinados en el Holocausto, más de un millón fueron en Auschwitz-Birkenau, la mayoría en las cámaras de gas, junto con decenas de miles de personas más, incluidos homosexuales, romaníes y prisioneros de guerra soviéticos.

Dushman fue uno de los 69 soldados de su división que sobrevivieron a la guerra, pero sufrió heridas graves.

Sin embargo, se convirtió en uno de los mejores esgrimistas de la Unión Soviética y, más tarde, en uno de los mejores entrenadores de esgrima del mundo, dijo el Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI).
