Hace unos 70 años nacían en el mundo árabe los movimientos nacionalistas laicos que hoy se derrumban, con estruendos de guerras civiles. Estas décadas (¡oh, casualidad!) coinciden con la instauración del primer estado democrático de la región (Israel, por si no lo habían adivinado). Uno no está acostumbrado a esto. Israel ya no es el principal protagonista de las noticias de Oriente Próximo. Lo que empezó con una movilización “primaveral” en el mundo árabe, se transformó en la más otoñal y sangrienta guerra civil musulmana de su historia.
Los centenares de millones de árabes reubicados al final de la Primera Guerra Mundial (tras la caída del Imperio Otomano) en decenas de países (la mayoría de muy reciente invención, como Tranjordania o Kuwait) comprendieron que su camino a la modernidad pasaba por alejarse de las tradiciones más inmovilistas y hacia la década de los 50 encontraron su razón de ser unificadora en la negación del sionismo que había hecho renacer desde inicios del siglo XX las abandonadas tierras de una parte de la provincia de Siria y hacia la que entonces convergían cada vez más árabes por el efecto llamada del espíritu pionero judío.

Porque, paradojas de la historia, el pueblo palestino que no ceja de plantear exigencias maximalistas en todas las negociaciones habidas desde entonces, nace -ahí están los números y la historia para demostrarlo- como consecuencia del sionismo, como acto reflejo del impulso que la llegada de los judíos produce en la olvidada subprovincia otomana y luego en el protectorado que Gran Bretaña ejerce en la zona, con la condición impuesta por la entonces Liga de las Naciones de crear en el futuro un “hogar nacional para los judíos”. Decenas de miles de árabes pauperizados de las regiones vecinas (especialmente de Egipto y Siria) encuentran sostén y condiciones laborales más humanas entre los judíos que llegan de todo el mundo. Sorprendente, pero cierto. La formación del pueblo palestino es un producto colateral del retorno de los judíos a su patria ancestral.

Sin embargo, en lugar de reconocer el efecto progresista y modernizador del sionismo, los estados árabes de las taifas de Oriente Próximo optaron por la negación absoluta de cualquier derecho a los judíos, iniciando un camino de “malas compañías”: desde la alianza del Mufti de Jerusalén con Hitler, al apoyo a la invasión de Kuwait por Sadam Husein, pasando por la negativa de la Liga Árabe a la partición de la ONU de 1947, la consecuente invasión de la recién proclamada Israel por parte de siete ejércitos, la ocupación militar de Gaza y Cisjordania del 49 al 67, y el apoyo a un terrorismo dedicado a atacar civiles, por citar sólo algunos de los más conocidos hitos históricos de su identidad.

Hoy, la calle árabe en general ve cómo el fruto de su esfuerzo colectivo se escurre por las alcantarillas de la cultura de la muerte (financiando al terrorismo) y la sumisión (a clérigos y reyes). Ojalá sean capaces de superar la ceguera que en estas décadas fueron intencionalmente implantadas para manipular sus corazones y mentes.
