Cada uno de nosotros tiene en su memoria olfativa el “Rosh Hashaná de su infancia”, el de los pasillos de los edificios o en las casas judías. Aquellos donde el aroma a guefilte fish era una marca registrada para saber que el Año Nuevo Judío estaba cerca.

Es apenas una parte de ese legado que nos transmitieron desde niños. El “ser” judío también es la comida.

Eran otros tiempos. La familia reunida alrededor de la mesa y el zeide en la cabecera. Hoy somos nosotros esa generación, pero la memoria olfativa se la transmitimos a nuestros hijos y nietos. Y algún día ellos serán quienes ocupen ese lugar.

Ser judío es un legado pero también una elección. Transitamos la vida siguiendo, en mayor o menor medida, nuestra tradición porque lo elegimos. Nadie nos obliga.

Y lo hacemos desde el lugar y la acción que creemos. Hay una frase de Marcelo Birmajer que cito porque me parece brillante: “Hay muchas maneras de ser judío, no hay ninguna para dejar de serlo”. Y la menciono porque la comunidad judía argentina tiene un gran desafío por delante: mantener la unidad en los tiempos que vienen. Y a esa unidad hay que agregarle comprensión, tolerancia, aceptación y solidaridad.

Vis á Vis decidió realizar una edición especial por Iamim Noraim, y para eso convocó a la comunidad judía a ser parte. Y la comunidad judía se sumó. La embajadora de Israel se sumó. El embajador de Argentina en Israel también. Como lo hizo la brillante Pilar Rahola. Y como lo hicieron los presidentes de todas las instituciones centrales de la comunidad judía argentina. Como lo hicieron los rabinos de todos los movimientos. Y también empresarios y empresas, colegios, comunidades del interior del país y sus dirigentes, las agrupaciones políticas y los principales dirigentes de la comunidad. Nos sentimos orgullosos de la recepción obtenida.

Entonces, cómo no voy a confiar en la comunidad judía argentina para lo que viene, a nivel nacional y comunitario.

Nosotros tenemos que honrar esta maravillosa oportunidad que nos da la vida de poder elegir quiénes somos, hacia dónde vamos y cómo lo transmitimos.

Termino con una pequeña historia: yo estoy hoy acá porque el papá de mi abuelo tuvo que tomar una terrible decisión, subir a sus dos hijos de 11 y 14 años a un tren que partía de Odessa sabiendo que nunca más los iba a ver. Tenía que salvarlos de la guerra. El resto de la familia fue asesinada junto a mi bisabuelo. Eran mi zeide David y su hermano Boris. Ellos fueron los únicos de esa familia que se salvaron. Luego de varios meses de trenes y barcos, llegaron a la Argentina

En el 5782 yo tengo la “obligación” de honrar nuestra elección de vida. También en homenaje a mi bisabuelo. Él no tuvo elección.
