La Universidad Bar-Ilan de Israel anunció el lanzamiento de un programa que invertirá 75 millones de dólares durante diez años para contrarrestar los efectos de la diabetes en el país, en especial entre la población de menores recursos económicos.

En Israel, “como en otros lugares, las poblaciones socioeconómicamente desfavorecidas corren un mayor riesgo de desarrollar y sufrir los efectos más graves de la enfermedad”, apuntaron desde la Bar-Ilan.
En ese sentido, agregaron que se espera que un millón de israelíes sean diagnosticados con diabetes para el 2040, con “un número desproporcionado de ellos” en la Galilea, una región “económicamente desfavorecida y étnicamente diversa”.

La iniciativa de la Universidad Bar-Ilan se encuentra, precisamente, enmarcada por varios otros proyectos israelíes para combatir la diabetes, incluyendo el desarrollo de una posible insulina de administración oral.
Entretanto, la necesidad de “enfoques innovadores” frente a la diabetes se hizo “mayor que nunca en la era del COVID-19” y en la post-pandemia, “debido a su efecto amplificado sobre las inequidades” del impacto de las enfermedades crónicas”, dijo el profesor Karl Skorecki, decano de la Facultad de Medicina de la universidad de Bar-Ilan y creador de SPHERE.
“Este es el proyecto más grande de su tipo en la historia de nuestra nación”, afirmó por su lado el profesor Naim Shehadeh, quien estará al frente del programa.
“Creo que servirá como un trampolín hacia próximos planes integrales nacionales y mundiales. Utilizará modelos científicos de vanguardia para mejorar los servicios de salud para las comunidades desfavorecidas”. Así añadió el renombrado endocrinólogo.
Entre los principales objetivos de SPHERE, Shehadeh destacó la reducción del 50 por ciento en la tasa de conversión de prediabetes a diabetes. Hubo un “aumento dramático” en el número de pacientes cuyos niveles de glucosa están bien controlados.
