Un hombre murió y otros cuatro resultaron heridos en un ataque a tiros llevado a cabo por un miembro de Hamás en la Ciudad Vieja de Jerusalén el domingo por la mañana.
Los servicios de rescate de Magen David Adom dijeron que dos de los heridos eran civiles y dos eran agentes de la policía fronteriza. Un hombre fue llevado en estado crítico al Hospital Hadassah Mount Scopus con heridas en la cabeza y luego fue declarado muerto.
Un segundo civil sufrió heridas de moderadas a graves y los agentes de la policía fronteriza sufrieron heridas leves.
Dos mujeres policías se apresuraron al lugar cerca de una de las entradas al Monte del Templo y abrieron fuego contra el atacante. Más tarde, dos agentes de la policía fronteriza corrieron a prestar ayuda.
El hombre muerto en el ataque fue identificado más tarde como Eliyahu David Kay, de 26 años, de la ciudad de Modi’in. Kay, un inmigrante de Sudáfrica, que fue empleado en el Muro Occidental como guía.

El primer ministro Naftali Bennett, quien envió sus condolencias a la familia del fallecido y pidió orar por los heridos en el ataque, dijo que había recibido una actualización del ministro de Seguridad Pública, Omer Bar-Lev, y del comisionado de policía Kobi. Shabtai y las fuerzas de seguridad deben aumentar su estado de alerta para frustrar nuevos ataques.
