Un sobreviviente del Holocausto de 99 años fue atropellado por un automovilista y murió cuando se dirigía a la sinagoga en Brooklyn.
Se trata de Jack Mikulincer, quien iba en una silla de ruedas eléctrica estilo scooter cuando recibió el impacto mortal.
La hija de Mikulincer, Aviva, afirmó ante el Daily News que la sinagoga ortodoxa fue un refugio para él.
“Le encantaba ir a la sinagoga. Cuando nos llegó el coronavirus dejó de haber sinagoga. Creo que eso le hizo sentirse solo y triste”, contó.
Mikulincer nació en Uzhhorod, en la actual Ucrania occidental, en 1923. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial escapó de un batallón de trabajos forzados y sirvió en grupos de resistencia antes de que lo liberaran los soviéticos.

Además, el sobreviviente del Holocausto luchó en la Guerra de la Independencia de Israel antes de trasladarse a Brooklyn, donde fue durante mucho tiempo propietario y operador de una panadería en Brighton Beach, un servicio de ambulancias, y un gabbai, o sacristán, en su sinagoga.
“Esto es una tragedia. Imagínense soportar lo que Jack Mikulincer hizo en su vida sólo para que termine así”, tuiteó el alcalde de Nueva York, Eric Adams. “Le debemos a su memoria hacer que nuestras calles sean seguras para todos los neoyorquinos”.

La semana pasada, el Comité de Transporte del Senado estatal también aprobó una ley de seguridad vial que lleva el nombre de Samuel Cohen Eckstein, un niño judío de 12 años que murió en 2013 por un conductor en Prospect Park West, en Brooklyn. “La Ley de Sammy” permite a Nueva York reducir los límites de velocidad a 20 mph en toda la ciudad; y hasta 5 mph en las calles con medidas de pacificación del tráfico.
El conductor (52) que atropelló a Mikulincer permaneció en el lugar de los hechos y no lo acusaron, confirmó la policía de Nueva York.
