Estudiantes judíos fueron obligados a asistir a una asamblea de oración cristiana durante la jornada escolar del instituto Huntington de Virginia Occidental.
En total fueron más de 100 los alumnos que debieron hacerse presentes y, por tal motivo, organizaron un paro.
Bethany Felinton afirmó a Associated Press que a su hijo, uno de los estudiantes judíos, le dijeron que no podía abandonar la asamblea de oración cristiana.
“Es una situación completamente injusta e inaceptable para poner a un adolescente. No estoy criticando su fe, pero hay un momento y un lugar para todo. En las escuelas públicas, durante la jornada escolar, no es el momento ni el lugar”, expresó Felinton.
Por su parte, un predicador cristiano evangélico que instó a los estudiantes a comprometerse con el cristianismo habló en el evento, que tuvo lugar durante un período diario reservado para el estudio, la oración o los oradores invitados opcionales.

El evento lo organizó el grupo Fellowship of Christian Athletes, que organiza la oración cristiana en escuelas y comunidades de EE.UU. y más allá.
Un portavoz del distrito escolar de Cabell manifestó que, supuestamente, la asamblea era voluntaria, pero que dos profesores llevaron por error a todas sus clases. “Es lamentable que haya ocurrido. No creemos que vuelva a ocurrir”, sentenció Jedd Flowers.
Este incidente, además, es el segundo de gran repercusión en días que denuncia la enseñanza cristiana en las escuelas públicas, que por ley se supone que no son sectarias.
Una madre judía de Chattanooga, Tennessee, denunció que un profesor de una clase de Biblia ofreció instrucción sobre “cómo torturar a un judío”. Esa clase, gestionada por una organización sin ánimo de lucro llamada Bible in the Schools, pretende ser no sectaria, según las autoridades.
También Max Nibert, un estudiante de último año de la Secundaria Huntington que participó en el paro, dijo que el evento era una violación de la separación de la iglesia y el estado.
“No creo que se deba acoger a ningún tipo de funcionario religioso en un edificio financiado por los contribuyentes con el propósito expreso de intentar convencer a los menores de que se bauticen después del horario escolar”, aseveró Nibert.
