Cada vez que me pasa, recuerdo la frase de James Carville en la exitosa campaña de Bill Clinton que lo llevó a la presidencia. «¡Es la economía, estúpido!», dijo el estratega de Clinton para señalar dónde estaba el centro del debate, y poner así en evidencia los artificios dialécticos del opositor Bush, que camuflaban la raíz del problema.

Más allá de las circunstancias en las que se pronunció, la contundente frase de Carville se ha convertido en un clásico para retratar a todos aquellos que, incapaces de ir al meollo de un hecho traumático, se salen por la tangente e intentan desviar el foco. Consiguen así dos resultados perversos: rebajar, minimizar y blanquear la gravedad del tema que se plantea, y, al mismo tiempo, aprovechar para colocar otro, llenándolo de consignas y propaganda.

Esta práctica de minimización y desvío del foco es un clásico permanente cuando se pronuncian algunas de las palabras que, según parece, conforman un triángulo fatídico: judíos, Israel y Holocausto. Es mencionar un tema vinculado a Israel ―tal vez por alguno de sus avances científicos― o a los judíos ―aunque sólo sea hablando de la Pésaj― o el Holocausto, da lo mismo de cuál se haga mención, porque inmediatamente aparecen los listillos de turno que pronuncian la frase de rigor: «¿Y los palestinos, qué?».

Y al instante ya no importa que se esté informando de un descubrimiento revolucionario para curar alguna enfermedad grave, o que se hable de una tradición milenaria o, peor, que se conmemore la masacre de millones de judíos en la Shoah, da igual todo, porque Israel no puede tener nada positivo, los judíos son todos culpables y el Holocausto es una tragedia cualquiera, fácilmente equiparable a hechos recientes.

Estos días he tenido la última experiencia. El jueves pasado se conmemoraba el Yom Hashoá, un día muy importante para la comunidad judía del mundo, conformada por personas que tienen familiares desaparecidos en el Holocausto.

Hay que recordar que hay dos fechas en recuerdo de las víctimas: la que estableció Ben-Gurión en 1959, que se sitúa alrededor de marzo y abril en el calendario gregoriano (el 27 de Nissan en el calendario hebreo), y que ahora se acaba de conmemorar; y la fecha del 27 de enero, establecida en 2007 por la ONU, coincidiendo con el día en que las tropas soviéticas liberaron el campo de exterminación de Auschwitz-Birkenau.

En ambos casos, se recuerdan todas las víctimas del nazismo, pero hay que señalar un hecho distintivo terrible: la industria de exterminio que creó el nazismo para exterminar a todos los judíos de Europa, culminado con la tétrica «solución final». Como dijo una vez un superviviente republicano de Mauthausen: «Nosotros íbamos al campo a sufrir y podíamos morir, pero los judíos iban directamente a morir».

El nazismo fue terrible para todo el mundo, pero el único objetivo de exterminio fue el pueblo judío, y casi lo consiguió, porque asesinó a tres cuartas partes de la población judía europea. De aquí que el Día de la Shoah sea, también, el día de la resistencia de los judíos, con el levantamiento del gueto de Varsovia como símbolo.

Decía, pues, que me ha vuelto a pasar. Publiqué estos días en las redes algunos mensajes en homenaje a las víctimas del Holocausto y, al instante, como si fuera el efecto Pavlov, empezaron a brotar los improperios, siempre con la frase de cabecera: «¿Y los palestinos, qué?».

O peor, otra muy malvada que, en sus diversas formas, viene a decir que ahora los judíos hacen lo mismo con los palestinos. Con respecto a este tema, me permito algunas reflexiones. De entrada, la absoluta mayoría de los que replican indignados ―y convencidos de que están en el «bando bueno»― no saben nada del conflicto, ni su historia, ni cómo se ha desarrollado, ni las responsabilidades de cada parte, ni qué países participan financiando ataques, logística y terrorismo contra Israel. ¿O creían que sólo se trata de palestinos e israelíes? Bendita estupidez.

La enorme ignorancia del tema es directamente proporcional a la osadía con la que muchos repiten, como loros, consignas prefabricadas y mentiras monumentales. Siempre me ha llamado la atención que el conflicto más complejo del mundo (con más de 70 años de duración) sea el que tenga «más expertos» que lo comentan.

Estos mismos «expertos» no sabrían decir nada sobre geopolítica, u otros conflictos larvados, o sobre el fenómeno del yihadismo en el Sahel, o sobre qué pasó con hutus y tutsis. Pero sobre Israel lo saben todo: que los judíos son muy malos y que los palestinos son muy buenos. Y así, la enorme complejidad del conflicto se convierte en un mero panfleto de propaganda. A la respuesta a «¿y los palestinos, qué?», tendríamos que estar horas explicando el papel perverso que han jugado los países árabes e islámicos durante décadas, la responsabilidad que han tenido los líderes palestinos ―históricos y actuales― al quemar todas las opciones, o al alimentar un discurso de odio permanente que sólo sirve para secuestrar el futuro de generaciones de palestinos, o al potenciar la ideología islamista que todo lo quema.

Aquí sólo nos interesamos por el tema cuando el ejército israelí hace una incursión, pero nunca queremos saber nada de los miles de misiles que han caído encima de la población israelí, o de los millones de euros dedicados a fomentar el yihadismo entre los palestinos, etcétera. Todo es blanco y negro, y así aquellos que nunca se han preocupado por las víctimas de los conflictos ―¿quieren que hablemos de los yemeníes, por ejemplo, sometidos a una guerra sangrante, o del actual conflicto del Senegal con el Daesh, o…?― tranquilizan su conciencia enarbolando la bandera palestina. Es maniqueísmo, es ignorancia y es hipocresía.

Pero la cosa empeora si, en lugar de hablar de Israel, hablamos de los judíos. Estos días, a raíz de Pegasus, ya hemos podido leer tantas burradas sobre la «culpa judía» en el espionaje, que me ahorro la vergüenza de responder a tanta imbecilidad.

Pero es necesario poner encima de la mesa el antisemitismo larvado y a menudo inconsciente que late en nuestra sociedad, un antisemitismo que, a estas alturas, es el fenómeno de odio que más crece en el mundo. Lo cual nos tendría que preocupar mucho, porque el antisemitismo es una escuela de odio: si se aprende a odiar a los judíos, sencillamente se aprende a odiar.

Aparte de que hablar de los «judíos» así, en genérico, no sólo es una estigmatización de todo un pueblo, sino una nueva burrada simplista. Tan judío es Woody Allen como un rabino ortodoxo. ¿De qué y de quién hablan todos estos, cuando dicen que hablan de los judíos?

Sin embargo, lo más grave es el tema del Holocausto. Mezclar el conflicto palestino actual con la matanza sistemática de millones de personas, madres, padres, hijos, familias completas, pueblos enteros arrasados, años de minucioso exterminio de todo un pueblo por parte del III Reich, hasta llegar a la solución final, con toda una industria de cámaras de gas trabajando día y noche para poder matar más y más gente antes de acabar la guerra ―cuesta mucho asesinar a seis millones de personas―, mezclar y equiparar todo esto con un conflicto complejo que tiene múltiples derivadas, es una maldad intrínseca, una insolidaridad terrorífica con las víctimas de la Shoah y, nuevamente, un ejemplo de ignorancia supina.

Lo dijo con crudeza Raymond Forado en la celebración del Yom Hashoá en la sinagoga del CIB de Barcelona: «Niegan nuestros muertos, para poder negar nuestros vivos».

Como es evidente, Israel comete errores, seguro, y también ha cometido abusos que hay que criticar. Pero intenta sobrevivir, rodeado de enemigos, desde que nació. El único país del mundo, por cierto, amenazado con la destrucción nuclear. ¿O acaso pensamos que Irán bromea?

Y los palestinos tienen razones y derechos, pero también son responsables de graves errores históricos y múltiples barbaridades, lo cual nunca se critica, ni se recuerda. Pero todo ello no sólo no tiene nada que ver con la magna tragedia del Holocausto, sino que compararlo es un acto de blanqueamiento del terror nazi. De modo que, a la pregunta «¿y los palestinos, qué?», la respuesta es evidente: «¡Es el Holocausto, estúpido!». Estúpido, en el mejor de los casos…
