La empresa israelí SpotitEarly, dirigida por Ariel Ben-Dayan, está realizando un sistema de detección temprana de cáncer a través del olfato de los perros.
Según la startup, la metodología se basaría en el sentido superior del olfato que estaría ayudado por inteligencia artificial.

En principio, el paciente debería comprar un kit que contiene una máscara quirúrgica donde deberá respirar durante cinco minutos. Luego, deberá enviar el artículo a un laboratorio donde varios perros entrenados trabajarán sobre la muestra e indicarán si el paciente tiene o no cáncer.
Para los expertos, los caninos son capaces de detectar la enfermedad por sus narices ultrasensibles, reportó Agencia AJN.
La empresa de Ben–Dayan, ex comandante de la unidad canina de las FDI, podría detectar con este método cáncer de mama, pulmón, colon o próstata.
En principio, los perros utilizados por SpotitEarly serían labradores porque tienen excelente capacidad para oler, disciplina y dedicación.
El proyecto continúa avanzando. Actualmente, la empresa está realizando ensayos en dos centros israelíes: Hadassah en Jerusalem y Sourasky en Tel Aviv.

El director de la empresa indica que “durante la fase de capacitación previa al ensayo, nuestra prueba mostró una mayor sensibilidad y una mejor especificidad en la detección de las primeras etapas del cáncer en comparación con cualquier prueba existente en el mercado actual”.
Por último, Ben–Dayan mencionó: “Esperamos un análisis intermedio en tres meses y terminaremos los ensayos clínicos en 10 meses”.
