La granja israelí donde animales y personas se curan juntos de traumas

El doctor Yoni Yehuda ideó la granja israelí donde animales y personas se curan juntos de traumas, un modelo único de terapia asistida en el que él, los pacientes y las criaturas son socios por igual.

Un zorro con tres patas, un camaleón que no puede sacar la lengua y otras 200 criaturas del arca de Noé moderna del psicoterapeuta Yoni Yehuda se rehabilitan de alguna discapacidad, trauma o lesión al igual que el propio sanador.

Mientras inhalaba cannabis medicinal para aliviar el dolor crónico resultante de un accidente de paracaidismo del ejército en 1987 y un ataque terrorista en 1996, Yehuda le explicó a ISRAEL21c en Español que él y cada uno de los animales rescatados en su Centro Havayot de Jerusalén son socios igualitarios de los pacientes gracias a su modelo único de psicoterapia asistida por animales de “Triángulos Terapéuticos”.

“Aquí, la base del trabajo es salvar animales y cuidarlos. Somos responsables de su bienestar mientras estén en nuestras jaulas, que no es donde se supone que deben estar”, explicó el profesional.

Mientras hablaba, alimentaba con la mano a un periquito calvo al tiempo que una yegua llamada Venus resoplaba contenta en su corral.

Además de aquellos nacidos allí, todos los animales del Centro Havayot llegaron al lugar luego de que algún trauma les impidiera sobrevivir en la naturaleza, de forma temporal o para siempre.
Algunos eran antiguos pacientes del Hospital de Vida Silvestre de Israel; otros fueron salvados y llevados a Yehuda por individuos o por la Autoridad de Parques Nacionales.

El triangulo

La psicoterapia asistida por animales no es nueva: en 1961, el terapeuta clínico estadounidense Boris Levinson escribió un artículo titulado “El perro como ‘coterapeuta’“ y en 1964 acuñó el término “terapia con mascotas”.

Desde hace mucho se sabe que los animales inducen la calma, la autoconciencia, la compasión y el ajuste emocional.

Sin embargo, en la clásica terapia asistida por animales -generalmente con perros o caballos- ellos son adjuntos al proceso terapéutico.
En cambio, en Havayot son parte integral del proceso ya que el paciente y el terapeuta se ocupan juntos de las necesidades del animal.

“Estamos en el mismo nivel y hay una conexión triangular con el animal y con el terapeuta. Todo viene de mucho respeto por los animales y dejar que ellos lideren el proceso. Como terapeuta tengo que dejar mi ego a un lado y luego el paciente puede proyectar cosas en los animales y comenzar a hablar sobre su propio mundo y buscar soluciones”, explicó Yehuda.

Según Yehuda, el terapeuta debe tener el conocimiento y la experiencia de observación para decidir qué animal tendrá el mejor valor terapéutico para cada cliente.

En ese sentido, Yehuda elige entre una gran variedad de seres: insectos, peces, reptiles, pájaros, roedores, animales salvajes y de corral, perros y un gato.
A cada uno le da un nombre y condiciones cómodas para sus necesidades.

El profesor Philip Tedeschi de la Universidad de Denver en EEUU, experto en terapia asistida por animales y fundador del Instituto para la Conexión Humano-Animal, visitó el Centro Havayot varias veces.

“Dijo que este puede ser el único lugar en el mundo con una variedad tan amplia de animales para terapia. Sin duda, fue el primero de su tipo”, afirmó Yehuda.

Los peces también son terapeutas

Cuando ISRAEL21c en Español le preguntó cómo los peces pueden ser compañeros terapéuticos, Yehuda señaló a Yossi, un hermoso pez dorado que nada en un acuario.

“Ponga su dedo en el cristal y tóquelo. Ahora muevalo hacia el otro lado y tóquelo. Se acercará porque a Yossi le encanta estar en contacto con la gente”, instruyó.

“Ahora, piense en un niño muy tímido que puede sufrir mutismo selectivo. Uno quiere darle la sensación de conexión con un animal pero con Yossi no hay que estar en contacto físico con él y no hay por qué hablarle”, expresó el terapeuta, que añadió que se puede intentar leer el lenguaje corporal de Yossi y convertirse en su portavoz.

“Si un niño no quiere hablarme pero comienza a hablarle al animal, entonces puede hablarme. El animal hace el cambio”, definió.

Un paciente que lucha contra el alcoholismo desde que nació de una madre alcohólica colocó una botella vacía de Jack Daniels en el acuario de Yossi. “El agua del acuario simboliza la vida, el útero. El pez representa nuestra capacidad de regresar al útero y renacer”, dijo Yehuda.

El profesional reveló que dejar la botella en el acuario le permitió a ese hombre comenzar de nuevo porque pudo dejar de beber. Ni Yehuda ni el pez tuvieron que decir nada.

Yehuda le mostró a ISRAEL21c en Español un laberinto construido por un niño que se enfrenta al divorcio de sus padres. Un ratón parte de una casa y aprende a seguir una ruta larga que conduce a dos sitios: la casa de la madre y la casa del padre.

Insectos como mariposas, bichos palo y las gigantescas cucarachas silbantes de Madagascar pueden ser eficaces en el tratamiento de diversas fobias y dificultades.

Las serpientes ayudan a los pacientes con problemas de identidad sexual debido a la forma en que mudan su piel y desarrollan una nueva a medida que crecen a lo largo de su vida.

Algo personal

Cuando Yehuda tenía 13 años, su amado primo Noam murió en acción en el Líbano. Los dos habían disfrutado cuidando las mascotas de Noam, incluida una oveja, y solían hablar sobre cómo los animales les ayudaban a comprender sus propios sentimientos.

En el momento de la tragedia, la familia Yehuda vivía en Inglaterra. Sensible al dolor de su hijo y su conexión con los animales, los padres de Yoni lo inscribieron en una clase para niños superdotados en el zoológico de Londres con Sir David Attenborough.

A los 19 años y luego de que un accidente de paracaidismo en un ejercicio militar lo dejara incapaz de caminar durante algún tiempo, Yehuda fue uno de los primeros soldados heridos tratados por la pionera de la equinoterapia Anita Shkedi, que más tarde fundó la Asociación Nacional de Equitación Terapéutica de Israel.

“Cuando nueve años después me dispararon en un ataque terrorista yo ya sabía que debía tener animales a mi alrededor porque solo con ellos podía entender lo que estaba pasando dentro de mí”, relató.

De 54 años, Yehuda tiene una maestría en educación especial y un doctorado en psicología. Hombre de fe, especula que Dios fue el primer psicoterapeuta asistido por animales: “Para salvar a la humanidad, Dios pone a Noé en el arca con todos estos animales. Podría haberlo puesto a dormir y despertarlo después de la inundación. Pero puso a las personas con animales para salvar sus propias almas”, dijo.

Sin embargo, enfatizó que los pacientes no necesitan compartir sus creencias religiosas para beneficiarse de su modelo terapéutico.

El Centro Havayot sin fines de lucro, construido en 1998 con las propias manos y fondos de Yehuda en los terrenos de su casa en Elazar, está supervisado por las autoridades veterinarias regionales y otras agencias gubernamentales y ministerios.

El sitio acepta pacientes privados y es una clínica autorizada para víctimas de ataques terroristas y guerra.

Yehuda abrió una Escuela de Terapia de Intervención Animal en la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén y viajó mucho dando conferencias sobre su trabajo y enseñando sus protocolos.

En 2009, el Servicio Postal de Israel emitió una serie de sellos que reconocían la influencia del modelo de Triángulos Terapéuticos de Yehuda en el campo de la terapia asistida por animales en Israel y en todo el mundo.

Saludar a cada animal

La rehabilitación física y emocional en curso de Yehuda lo obligó a dar un paso atrás. A diario se enfrenta al trastorno de estrés postraumático, la fibromialgia, el síndrome de dolor regional complejo (SDRC) y otras dolencias, incluida la osteoporosis debido a la terapia intensiva con esteroides.

Para salid adelante tiene sesiones diarias de fisioterapia e hidroterapia, y periódicamente recibe oxigenoterapia hiperbárica para el trastorno de estrés postraumático.

En la actualidad, Yehuda dona sus servicios a miembros de una organización israelí que ayuda a las personas que padecen trastorno de estrés postraumático (TEPT). El grupo del área de Jerusalén abarca más de 70 familias.

“Mi innovación fue que también trabajo con las familias, porque están descuidadas. Nadie le preguntó a mi esposa Liat si necesitaba ayuda. Cuando estaba en silla de ruedas, la necesidad de ayuda era obvia. Pero cuando tienes TEPT, es difícil que la gente entienda el infierno que está pasando en tu cabeza y cómo afecta a tu familia”, dijo Yehuda.
