Yad Vashem, el memorial oficial del Holocausto de Israel, espera alcanzar 5 millones de nombres de víctimas de la Shoá en los próximos años.
Como parte de su mandato y misión, Yad Vashem recopiló recopilando nombres de víctimas de la Shoá desde la década de 1950.
Hasta la fecha ha recopilado unas 4.800.000 identidades de hombres, mujeres y niños judíos asesinados durante el Holocausto. Solo en 2022, el Centro Mundial de Conmemoración de la Shoá logró localizar unos 40.000 nombres adicionales de víctimas.
A través de un comunicado, y según estimaciones de expertos de Yad Vashem, en los próximos años se podrían agregar entre 200.000 y 300.000 nombres a la Base de datos central de nombres de víctimas, lo que daría un total de más de 5 millones de identidades de los seis millones estimados de víctimas del Holocausto.
“A medida que nos alejamos más de los eventos del Holocausto, nuestra tarea de recordar y conmemorar se vuelve mucho más desafiante”, aseveró el director del Salón de los Nombres de Yad Vashem y su Proyecto de Recuperación de Nombres, el Dr. Alexander Avram. «Si bien todavía es posible recolectar nuevos nombres, será a una tarifa reducida».

“Naturalmente, los sobrevivientes del Holocausto y sus contemporáneos son cada vez menos, y aquellos que nunca lograron dar testimonio o registrar nombres ya no podrán hacerlo. A pesar de todos estos desafíos, seguimos comprometidos con la causa. Estamos en contacto con muchos archivos e instituciones que se ocupan de la memoria y la conmemoración en todo el mundo, con la esperanza de que podamos lograr este objetivo», explicó.
Avram también señaló dificultades objetivas en el trabajo de localizar los nombres.
«Desde el comienzo de nuestros esfuerzos de recopilación nos dimos cuenta de que ubicar los nombres de los niños sería particularmente difícil. En muchos casos no los registraron cuando fueron asesinados junto con sus familias. Nunca tendremos un registro completo de todos los nombres. Los nazis deliberadamente no estaban interesados en documentar sus crímenes e incluso trataron de encubrirlos. Es por eso que cada nuevo nombre que logramos descubrir y perpetuar es otra pequeña victoria contra los nazis y sus cómplices, y su intento de borrar a los judíos y al judaísmo de la faz de la tierra», concluyó.
