Ella era Lola Touza y junto a sus hermanas Amparo y Julia habían montado una red clandestina para salvar la vida a miembros de la comunidad judía que llegaban a España en el tren desde Hendaya. Salvaron a más de 500 durante la II Guerra Mundial, de ahí que se les conozca como las Schindlers gallegas.

A  menudo, pasamos por las calles y avenidas y nos resultan indiferentes las placas conmemorativas de las paredes. Las prisas hacen probablemente que ni nos fijemos en por qué hay una placa metálica honrando a tal o cual persona o determinada gesta. Eso puede pasar con muchos turistas que paseen estos días por la judería de la localidad gallega de Ribadavia, donde una modesta placa reza lo siguiente: «Ás tres irmás Touza. La historia nos llega a través del arquitecto Julio Touza, a la sazón, nieto de Lola Touza y sobrino de Amparo y de Julia, y desde que nos la esbozó supimos que merecía figurar entre los relatos de verano. Sorprende que en España, donde no sabemos vendernos especialmente bien, a menudo haya ‘historiones’ de esos que hacen salivar a cualquier periodista y que, sin embargo, no tienen el reconocimiento general del público que merecen porque, ¿quién no conoce al Schindler alemán gracias a Spielberg? Estas mujeres gallegas merecerían estar al mismo nivel.

En la casa habían habilitado un escondite disimulado bajo un falso suelo: un espacio de unos 20 metros cuadrados excavado bajo tierra donde comían y descansaban los huidos en espera del momento propicio para cruzar la frontera con Portugal, que se hallaba a escasos 11 metros.

En su red de ayuda y solidaridad, de la que nunca hablaron estando con vida, contaron con la complicidad de los taxistas Xosé Rocha Freixido y Xavier Miguez y del barquero Ramón Estévez, y seguramente de otros tantos cuyos nombres no conocemos, pero ayudaron a salvar a muchas personas. La red de ayudas arrancaba en la frontera con Francia: en un primer tramo llegaba hasta Medina del Campo y desde allí continuaba hasta Monforte y Ribadavia. Los enlaces avisaban a las hermanas Touza de que tal viajero llegaba en el tren y entonces ellas pasaban a la acción. El nombre en clave de Lola Touza era «La Madre»: la Gestapo acudió en varias ocasiones a Ribadavia preguntando por ella, pero nunca consiguieron conocer su identidad.

El casino de las Touza cerró en los años cincuenta y las hermanas siguieron con su trabajo en la cantina de la estación. Lola Touza murió en junio de 1966, Amparo en febrero de 1981 y Julia, en junio de 1983. Están enterradas en el cementerio de Ribadavia.

En Israel, hay un árbol que lleva el nombre de las Touza y en su día, a la estación de tren de Ribadavia se la conocía como Estación Libertad, la que dieron las hermanas Touza a más de 500 personas.
