El primer ministro de Rumania, Marcel Ciolacu, dijo tras anunciar la integración del Holocausto y la historia judía al plan de estudios escolar que enfrentar un pasado oscuro era necesario para una democracia fuerte.
Rumania fue un aliado de Alemania en la Segunda Guerra Mundial hasta agosto de 1944. Cientos de miles de judíos y romaníes rumanos y ucranianos fueron asesinados en las zonas que controlaba.
El Estado de la Unión Europea admitió por primera vez en 2003 su participación en los asesinatos.
“Estoy entre los que no dudan en hablar de patriotismo”, aseveró Ciolacu en su discurso. La integración de estos temas al plan de estudios se aprobó en 2021, tal como contó Vis á Vis en aquel año.

Por su parte, el legislador Silviu Vexler, presidente de la federación de comunidades judías de Rumania, quien inició el cambio de plan de estudios, dijo que la clase fue «el primer paso real para asumir plenamente la responsabilidad por lo que sucedió».
Los partidos de extrema derecha ganaron terreno en toda Europa. En Rumania, por ejemplo, que celebrará elecciones presidenciales, generales, locales y europeas en 2024, el partido de oposición ultranacionalista AUR, que arrasó en el parlamento en las elecciones anteriores, se posiciona primero en la mayoría de las encuestas de opinión.
