El incidente del miércoles por la noche en Cooper Union, una universidad privada en el centro de Manhattan, ocurrió después de que estudiantes propalestinos y proisraelíes realizaran manifestaciones enfrentadas.

Las imágenes del incidente en Cooper Union mostraron a un grupo de estudiantes judíos en la biblioteca, mientras los manifestantes afuera golpeaban las puertas y ventanas del edificio, cantando “Palestina libre”, agitando carteles que abogaban por un boicot a Israel y pidiendo un alto el fuego en la guerra contra Hamás en Gaza.
El personal del edificio había tomado la decisión de cerrar las puertas con llave.
La policía de Nueva York ha estado en contacto con la escuela y presente en su campus, y le dijo a The New York Jewish Week que no hubo daños a la propiedad, ni informes criminales o heridos durante el incidente.
Pero los estudiantes judíos que hablaron con CBS dijeron que se sentían amenazados.
“Era tenso, la gente estaba nerviosa”, dijo una estudiante que apareció en las imágenes del incidente y habló con la CBS pero no dio su nombre. “Estaban actuando específicamente de manera muy agresiva en aquellos espacios donde estaban sentados estudiantes aparentemente judíos“.
CBS informó que los manifestantes propalestinos emitieron un comunicado que decía: “Nuestra protesta no estaba dirigida a ningún estudiante o profesorado individual, sino a la institución misma”. La declaración también repudiaba el antisemitismo.
Cooper Union dijo: “La biblioteca estuvo cerrada durante aproximadamente 20 minutos esta tarde mientras los estudiantes manifestantes avanzaban por nuestro edificio. Algunos estudiantes que anteriormente estaban en la biblioteca permanecieron allí durante este tiempo”.
Líderes judíos, así como funcionarios municipales y estatales, así como la ADL y el AJC, condenaron el incidente.
Mientras tanto, grupos de estudiantes en Nueva York y en todo el país realizaron una huelga en apoyo a los palestinos el miércoles.
