Un entrenador de básquet de un colegio de Yonkers, Nueva York, fue despedido por insultar a las jugadoras rivales, de escuela judía, y manifestar su apoyo a Hamás.
Además del entrenador de la Escuela Secundaria Roosevelt, una de las jugadoras de su equipo también fue expulsada por sumarse a los ataques verbales antisemitas.
El hecho ocurrió durante el juego entre la Escuela Leffell, una escuela judía privada en Hartsdale, y la Escuela Secundaria Roosevelt, una escuela pública en Yonkers, ambas de Nueva York.
Tanto el entrenador de básquet como sus jugadoras realizaron insultos antisemitas a sus oponentes, entre los que se destacaron y denunciaron: «Apoyo a Hamás, maldita judía».
Se necesitaron árbitros y guardias de seguridad para interrumpir el juego. Incluso escoltaron a los jugadores de la Escuela Leffell fuera de la cancha.
El superintendente interino de las Escuelas Públicas de Yonkers, Dr. Luis Rodríguez, y el alcalde de Yonkers, Mike Spano, emitieron una declaración conjunta sobre la situación.
«Las Escuelas Públicas de Yonkers, junto con la ciudad de Yonkers, se disculpan sinceramente con los estudiantes y la comunidad de la Escuela Leffell por los comentarios dolorosos y ofensivos hechos a su equipo de baloncesto femenino durante un juego reciente con la Escuela Secundaria Roosevelt», decía el comunicado (vía el NY Post).

«Colectivamente, no toleramos ni toleraremos discursos de odio de ningún tipo por parte de nuestros estudiantes y comunidad», se lee más adelante en la declaración.
«La retórica antisemita supuestamente dirigida contra los estudiantes atletas de la Escuela Leffell es aborrecible, inapropiada y no está en línea con los valores que establecemos para nuestros jóvenes», concluye el comunicado.
Según Robin Bosworth, jugadora de Leffell, quien escribió sobre el incidente en el periódico escolar, la primera mitad fue «un ambiente un tanto hostil, con sustancialmente más golpes y comentarios lanzados a las jugadoras de nuestro equipo que lo que experimenté en el pasado».
Algunas jugadoras de Leffell comenzaron a lesionarse en el tercer cuarto, lo que, según Bosworth, sucedió debido al «estilo de juego físico» de Roosevelt.
«Al final del cuarto, las jugadoras del equipo contrario comenzaron a gritarnos ‘Palestina libre’ y otros insultos y maldiciones antisemitas», escribió Bosworth. «Atacar a un equipo debido a la asociación religiosa de su escuela nunca es aceptable, pero especialmente debido a la guerra actual en Israel y el aumento del antisemitismo en el mundo, esto fue extremadamente personal para mí y para muchos miembros de mi equipo».

Un portavoz de la escuela reveló que Roosevelt aceptó una renuncia voluntaria y el juego concluyó.
Bosworth dijo que ambos equipos se alinearon para darse la mano al final prematuro del juego.
«A pesar de nuestros sentimientos encontrados sobre su práctica, cada miembro de mi equipo actuó con respeto y clase y se puso en fila para estrecharles la mano», escribió. «Sin embargo, verme obligada a estrechar la mano y decir ‘buen juego’ a personas que habían expresado tanto odio no me sentó bien después».
