Un hombre de Massachusetts fue arrestado el lunes por amenazar con matar a miembros de la comunidad judía del estado y poner bombas en sinagogas locales, dijo la oficina del fiscal federal en Boston.
John Reardon, de 59 años, de Millis, Massachusetts, llamó a la Congregación Agudas Achim en Attleboro el 25 de enero y dejó un mensaje de voz en el que amenazaba varias veces con matar a los feligreses y bombardear la sinagoga, incluyendo que “si pueden matar a los palestinos, nosotros podemos matarte”.
El sospechoso, que había estado bajo custodia de la Oficina del Sheriff del condado de Bristol, ha sido acusado de utilizar una instalación de comercio interestatal para amenazar a una persona o lugar con daño mediante un explosivo.
Reardon tenía previsto comparecer ante el Tribunal de Distrito de Estados Unidos en Boston el lunes por la tarde. Si es declarado culpable, enfrentará una sentencia de hasta 10 años de prisión, tres años de libertad supervisada y una multa de hasta 250.000 dólares.
“Las acusaciones aquí sobre la serie de amenazas que el Sr. Reardon hizo contra la comunidad judía son profundamente inquietantes y reflejan el creciente torrente de antisemitismo en todo nuestro país y aquí mismo en Massachusetts”, dijo el fiscal federal interino Joshua S. Levy en un comunicado.
«Las cifras no mienten: los incidentes de antisemitismo e islamofobia están aumentando«, concluyó Levy.
Por su parte, Jodi Cohen, agente especial a cargo del FBI, División de Boston, acusó a Reardon de “usar sus palabras como arma, dejando un mensaje amenazante para asustar a los miembros” de la Congregación Agudas Achim.
«Nadie debería temer ser víctima de violencia física a manos de un extraño enojado«, dijo Cohen.
