Estados Unidos lanzó ataques aéreos en Irak y Siria contra más de 85 objetivos vinculados a la Guardia Revolucionaria de Irán (IRGC) y las milicias que ésta respalda, y reportaron la baja de casi 40 personas, en represalia por un ataque mortal contra tropas estadounidenses .
Los ataques, que incluyeron el uso de bombarderos B-1 de largo alcance procedentes de Estados Unidos, fueron los primeros en respuesta al ataque del fin de semana pasado en Jordania por parte de militantes respaldados por Irán, y se esperan más operaciones militares estadounidenses en los próximos días.
Los ataques intensificaron un conflicto que se ha extendido a la región desde que estalló la guerra entre Israel y Hamás después del mortal ataque del grupo militante palestino contra Israel el 7 de octubre.
El portavoz del Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores de Irán, Nasser Kanaani, dijo en un comunicado que los ataques representaban «otro error estratégico y aventurero de Estados Unidos que sólo resultará en un aumento de la tensión y la inestabilidad».
Irak convocó al encargado de negocios de Estados Unidos en Bagdad para realizar una protesta formal.
