Cuando una trabajadora del hogar polaca descubrió en 2020 un sobre polvoriento con la inscripción “Polonia II”, entre documentos personales antiguos en una casa de Brunswick (Alemania) cuyo dueño había muerto, aún no era consciente del alcance de su hallazgo. Sabía que los 140 negativos de fotografías que había dentro del sobre tenían un valor histórico, pero no que se convertirían en el primer registro visual del comienzo de la ocupación nazi de la ciudad polaca de Oświęcim, llamada Auschwitz por los alemanes. Las instantáneas muestran el día a día de la comunidad judía bajo el control del Tercer Reich, antes de la construcción del mayor campo de concentración y exterminio del Holocausto, que comenzó a funcionar en junio de 1940 y donde perecieron más de un millón de personas.

“Son un documento único. Algunas de las imágenes están movidas o desenfocadas, pero su verdadero valor no es el artístico, sino ser documento de un momento de inflexión en la historia de la II Guerra Mundial. En varias de ellas aparecen niños y hombres judíos que observan fijamente a la cámara con los brazos cruzados o las manos en los bolsillos. Llevaba un brazalete en el brazo izquierdo con la estrella de David sobre un fondo blanco, el distintivo que fueron obligados a portar. Más adelante tuvieron que portar tarjetas de identificación especiales, sellos en documentos o marcas en la ropa.

“En el distrito de Katowice , del que Oświęcim formaba parte, se introdujo desde noviembre de 1939 la obligación de llevar bandas blancas en el hombro izquierdo con la palabra jude. En el verano esto fue sustituido por una estrella de David con un fondo blanco en el pecho izquierdo. A su vez, desde el 21 de diciembre de 1939, y en toda la provincia de Silesia [a la que también se adscribe Auschwitz], los judíos mayores de 10 años debían llevar una banda blanca con la estrella de David”, resume Szyndler. ¿Eso significa que las fotografías se corresponden a ese último período? “No sabemos la fecha exacta, pero en mi opinión son de los primeros meses de 1940″, responde el historiador.

Las fotos muestran también a la comunidad judía haciendo largas filas, principalmente mujeres y niños, en la histórica Plaza del Mercado Principal o en otras calles de la urbe y bajo la vigilancia de agentes de las SS. Pueden estar haciendo cola para entrar al centro de la ciudad ―para llegar a ella había que tener pases especiales― o esperando para recoger racionamientos de comida o podría tratarse de algún tipo de registro por parte de las autoridades de ocupación, hipotetiza Szyndler. “Es necesario seguir investigando para tener información más precisa”.

Además de retratar a la población judía sometida a las fuerzas alemanas, los negativos muestran calles y monumentos importantes de la ciudad. Una de las imágenes es la primera a color de Oświęcim de la que se tiene registro. En ella se puede ver el puente sobre el río Soła y el castillo de la ciudad, construido a principios del siglo XVI, que durante la guerra fue la sede de las fuerzas de ocupación. En otras aparece la calle Jagiełły (nombrada por los alemanes como Hermann Göring), una de las más importantes de la localidad y por la que se llegaba a lo que después sería el campo de Auschwitz-Bikernau.
