La Fundación Patrimonio Cultural Prusiano (SPK, por sus siglas alemanas) de Berlín ha restituido cinco obras de arte a los herederos del marchante de arte judío Franz Zatzenstein-Matthiesen, quien para huir de la persecución nazi vendió lienzos de su galería al Dresdner Bank, informó este lunes la institución cultural berlinesa. “La SPK ha realizado grandes esfuerzos junto con los herederos de los propietarios de la Galería Matthiesen para encontrar una solución justa y equitativa con respecto a estas obras”, indicó en un comunicado la fundación berlinesa, que dio cuenta del agradecimiento de los herederos por el trabajo que llevado esas cinco obras a los familiares del marchante.
Se trata de un lienzo del maestro flamenco Anton van Dyck, dos obras atribuidas al holandés Jan van de Capelle, otra del italiano Giovanni Battista Tiepolo y una última cuyo autor no ha sido identificado aunque se pensó en su momento que pudo ser Ambrosius Benson, según el comunicado de la SPK.
Los cinco lienzos habían recaído en el archivo de la ‘Gemäldegalerie’, pinacoteca que forma parte del conjunto de Museos Estatales de Berlín, después de que en 1933 permitieran a Franz Zatzenstein-Matthiesen salir de la Alemania nazi, pues huyó a Suiza gracias a la venta de esas obras al Dresdner Bank. Los herederos están muy agradecidos a la SPK por la forma responsable en que la Fundación ha tratado este caso.
“Como museo e institución pública, no sólo es nuestro deber sino también una cuestión de rutina encontrar soluciones justas junto con los herederos para tratar las obras que puedan identificarse como bienes culturales incautados como consecuencia de la persecución nazi”, explicó Dagmar Hirchfelder, directora de la Gemäldegalerie. Para ella, los cuadros restituidos son “testigos de injusticias sufridas” por lo que dijo estar “enormemente complacida” por poder devolver los lienzos a los descendientes de la Galería Matthiesen.
Unas 4.400 obras de arte fueron vendidas en 1935 por el Dresdner Bank a la institución cultural responsable de los museos alemanes. Desde 2018 el Archivo Central de los Museos de la Ciudad-Estado de Berlín analiza si tiene en su haber trabajos cuyo origen está en la persecución del nacionalsocialismo.
