Van Maarsen era hija de padre judío y madre criada en el cristianismo y convertida al judaísmo.
Su madre consiguió que ella y su hermana fueran declaradas no judías en 1942, lo que les permitió sobrevivir a la guerra y al Holocausto.
La mayor parte de la familia del padre de van Maarsen fue asesinada por los nazis.
Después de la guerra, van Maarsen se casó, tuvo tres hijos y trabajó como encuadernadora de libros.
