Para descubrir la facilidad de la vida en Israel, leamos un midrash de la vida del patriarca Abraham. «R. Leví dijo: Cuando Abraham estaba vagando (después de dejar la casa de su padre en el oriente) en Aram Naharayim y Aram Najor (Siria), vio comiendo, bebiendo y bailando [a sus habitantes]. Dijo: Que no reciba mi parte en esta tierra. El Rambán interpreta la explicación dicha como una advertencia. Él les dijo: «Y observarán las mitzvot… y heredarán una tierra» (11,8) de leche y miel, porque Dios dará lluvia a su tierra en el momento oportuno, y la tierra dará su producto. Pero que sepas que no es como Egipto, donde se riega a pie desde los canales y estanques como un huerto. Es «una tierra de colinas y valles, – beberás agua de las lluvias del cielo», ¡y no de ninguna otra manera! Por lo tanto, requiere que Dios lo cuide siempre con lluvia, porque tiene mucha sed y necesita lluvia todo el año. Si transgredes la voluntad de Dios y Él no la cuida con lluvias, entonces (la tierra) será muy mala y no crecerá (nada).
Luego, los versículos repiten y explican todo esto en la siguiente sección: si escuchas mis mitzvot, «Daré la lluvia de tu tierra a su tiempo», pero si no escuchas, «Él detendrá la lluvia…» (11, 13-17).
¿Es esta una bendición? El midrash citado anteriormente afirma que se trata de la consagración del atributo que lleva a Abraham a enamorarse de esta tierra. Cualquier persona interpretaría que la dependencia del Creador y el esfuerzo para lograr frutos no es una bendición sino una carga difícil de llevar.
La tierra de Israel vive, por así decirlo, al borde del abismo (¡lo que probablemente explica también la política!). En cualquier momento hay agua suficiente para unos días más. La bendición no proviene de un gran recurso natural como el Nilo, sino del «cielo» – «beberéis agua de las lluvias del cielo«. Esto es lo contrario de regar «con los pies». Los ojos de los habitantes están necesariamente vueltos todo el tiempo hacia las alturas.
El judío vive en dependencia, recibiendo de las manos de Dios, cuyos ojos «están sobre la tierra» siempre, y no imaginando que su subsistencia está garantizada por un recurso que posee en forma gratuita tirado bajo la palmera con un sombrero ancho que lo protege de las inclemencias y que todo está bajo su control.
Es importante que entendamos que se trata de una bendición, aunque tal vez no sea psicológicamente cómoda y tengamos la tendencia de rechazarla.
La Torá ha advertido anteriormente contra la comodidad de tener las riquezas en las propias manos. La bendición es poder defendernos y autoabastecernos, mientras alzamos los ojos y los corazones a lo celestial.
Sin necesidad de hacer un análisis teológico podemos encontrar en estas imágenes una clave más del desastre de la guerra de Sheminí Atzeret cuyas consecuencias todavía nos acompañan. «No sea que comáis y os saciéis, y construyáis buenas casas y os establezcáis. Y se multiplicarán vuestros rebaños y manadas, y se os multiplicará el oro y la plata, y se multiplicará todo lo que es vuestro. Y tu corazón se enaltecerá y olvidarás a .A. tu Dios…. Y dirás en tu corazón: mi fuerza y el poder de mi brazo han hecho para mí toda esta riqueza (8, 13-17).
Cuando las cosas aparentaban ir bien. La economía crecía. La bolsa alcanzaba alturas insospechadas. Los medios de comunicación transmitían con euforia, e incluso algunos con elogios interminables a los políticos. Teníamos relativa tranquilidad en las fronteras al grado que podíamos pagar en efectivo al Hamás para que se quede calmoso, confiando que nosotros somos más inteligentes y que nuestros enemigos -los que juraron exterminarnos- estaban descansando engordando con las cuotas que les entregábamos a través de otro enemigo Qatar que contaba en la asesoría de israelíes piadosos que informaban a las autoridades que podíamos seguir enalteciéndonos y engriéndonos, diciendo que «el poder de mi brazo y líderes iluminados nos protegerían».
Ahora entendemos el significado de «una tierra que Dios cuida«.
Dios no nos ha dado una tierra naturalmente rica y nos ha dicho que disfrutemos. Pero, nos autoengañamos buscando el camino fácil, como el de los agricultores egipcios de antaño para quienes el Nilo les reemplazaba las lluvias.
.A. nos ha dicho: si necesitáis algo (como así será), acudid a mí, pues siempre me interesa vuestro bienestar. Pedid y os lo proporcionaré (¡por favor, Dios!). Nuestros ojos están vueltos hacia arriba, hacia (las lluvias del) cielo, y los ojos de Dios están sobre la tierra, «desde el principio del año hasta el fin del año«.
Esta descripción de la tierra, el hábitat previsto del pueblo judío, es también la descripción del estado normativo de los propios judíos. Su recurso está en Dios. Éste es a la vez mayor que cualquier recurso natural posible, pero también más «arriesgado».
El recurso más valioso que .A. nos dio fue la necesidad de estar siempre alertas mirando hacia las alturas, trabajando con denuedo e intrepidez sin distraernos. Sin exentar por motivos electorales a los zánganos que nunca sintieron que esta es también su tierra y que sus habitantes son sus hermanos, a los que había que defender ante todo peligro y alimentar ante toda carencia.
Cuando tengamos el valor de nombrar una comisión investigadora que llegue a la verdad de nuestra derrota, podremos percibir lo que nos dice la parashá.
Y quizás volvamos a desyerbar en el momento apropiado y arar en el instante oportuno y con la bendición de .A. conquistaremos la paz y la compartiremos con los que hoy son nuestros enemigos, y bendeciremos por cada bocado ganado en buena ley.
Y, con amor podremos ver a los abejarrones que hoy sobrevuelan su ajenidad, sin aprender a laboral útilmente porque no desean estudiar profesiones y se resisten con la complicidad de políticos que buscan mantener el poder, participar en el honor de la defensa de la tierra y del pueblo, pidiendo socorro para entender lo que con tanta claridad nos dice la Torá para ser parte del pueblo de Israel.
Y Abraham, podrá saber que no se equivocó cuando eligió esta tierra y nosotros todos sin excepción veremos los albores de nuestra redención porque seremos libres.
