En Rocas Negras, 6 km al sur de la Virgen, está la estancia La Providencia, también conocida como Los Médanos, que termina en el mar. En ese lugar está La Punta de Pérez y hasta ahí iba Gustavo Eickenberg con un Jeep Willys para transmitir con su radio, que tenía una antena de punta larga. En el tiempo de mis abuelos era todo médanos y ahora hay un bosque: ese monte de pinos lo sembró Eickenberg; a este alemán los paisanos le decían Heineken. Y del Mercedes Benz de Kadgien me acuerdo muy bien, era celestito, tipo rural. (José Pérez, hombre de mar y campo).
El caso tiene mucha solidez, tuvimos una política de persecución muy fuerte porque al día siguiente que llegó la presentación de Interpol estábamos allanando la casa. Fuimos muy firmes con las detenciones y entregaron el cuadro. (Daniel Adler, fiscal general de Mar del Plata).
La familia del coleccionista reclama el cuadro y aportó documentación de cómo fue inventariado por el galerista Jacques Goudstikke. La principal hipótesis es la de una subasta entre funcionarios nazis donde se repartieron las obras. El cuadro termina en las manos de Kadgien. La imputación sostiene que hubo encubrimiento de una de las hijas y de su marido: sabían que el cuadro era buscado y quisieron ocultarlo. Quién es el autor de la obra es aleatorio. Kadgien le pide al chofer que conduce la rural Mercedes Benz que se detenga y haga subir a una niña que camina sola rumbo a la escuela primaria del convento La Eufemia. Los chicos del paraje San José saben que si tienen suerte y se lo cruzan por el camino, el viejo Kadgien los alcanza hasta la escuela.
Amigable y discreto, el alemán va sentado en el asiento del acompañante, viste como un criollo, habla español y tiene cédula argentina. Es el dueño de la estancia El Porvenir, a poco más de quince kilómetros de distancia del Hotel Boulevard Atlántico, en Mar del Sud.

Cuando el viejo le pregunta a la niña su nombre, se interesa especialmente por el apellido. Ella dice que Colman, con “c” y una sola “n”, es de origen inglés y entonces el alemán esboza una sonrisa. Federico Gustavo Kadgien deja a la niña en el colegio y sigue viaje hacia el chalet de su estancia, su lugar en el mundo. Para principios de los años setenta es uno de los estancieros más pudientes y respetados del sudeste campero. Arrienda sus tierras a los chacareros de Mechongué. Cría caballos y es socio del Jockey Club. Suele mandar a carnear algún novillo con el que la peonada hace tremendos asados, especialmente cuando lo visitan sus alte kameraden.
La niña que viajaba en el auto de Kadgien es la hermana de Alberto Colman, un agricultor vecino de Mechongué que trabajó en la estancia El Porvenir en los años 70. Su testimonio, que pude obtener en exclusiva tras conocerlo como oyente en el programa de radio del conductor Javier Teti (LU9-AM630), confirmó lo que nadie había contado hasta ese momento: que el financista nazi que huyó de Europa con un tesoro incalculable en un contexto de genocidio tenía una estancia en las afueras de Mar del Sud, cuando todos los investigadores lo situaban en Mar del Plata.
En aquélla época Colman era un muchacho que trabajaba en la estancia de Kadgien, contratado por el chacarero Francisco Gioitta, un italiano muy conocido que le alquilaba al alemán una parte de su campo para cultivar papa. “Lo recuerdo alto y flaco, con mucha presencia, muy educado. Su mujer era hermosa y sus hijas también, las veía andar a caballo en los veranos cuando ellas venían de vacaciones, en ese entonces yo también era un adolescente”, retrata Colman.
Después de su testimonio pude hablar con otras tres personas cercanas a la familia del estanciero alemán y todas ellas afirman que la estancia El Porvenir era propiedad del schutzstaffel (ss) Friedrich Gustav Kadgien, abogado, experto en finanzas y jefe del departamento de obtención de divisas en los territorios ocupados durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, uno de los hombres más valiosos del mariscal Hermann Göring. Claro que esto, en el pueblo, nadie lo sabía: el “mago de las finanzas” se había convertido en un acaudalado terrateniente argentino.
Los vecinos del paraje San José, en el cruce con la ruta 88, lo recuerdan como criador de caballos y dueño de otro campo, contiguo al convento La Eufemia, pero con exclusiva salida al mar. Se llama La Providencia y era conocido también como Los Médanos. Cuentan que Kadgien llegaba cada tanto a Mar del Sud desde Vicente López; que manejaba su chofer, llamado Edgard, quien era, a la vez, el marido de la cocinera de la estancia. Una pick-up tipo rural Mercedes Benz 220D ensamblada en la Argentina transportaba al patrón y a su chofer. Solía acompañarlo además una joven deslumbrante, de blanca piel y esbelta figura, la mujer más bella que ningún paisano recuerde jamás. Su esposa, Hildegard Strauss.
“Ella era mucho más joven que él, que también era re pintón. Cuando compró la estancia, mi papá y mi tío fueron a hacer los techos de los galpones”, se acuerda otra vecina de Mechongué, el pueblo donde la última hija del alemán, Patricia Kadgien, cursó dos años del secundario. El paso de Patricia por el colegio religioso Juan XXIII ocurrió más tarde, a principios de los ochenta, después de que el jerarca ss convertido en próspero estanciero muriera en 1978. Antes, las hijas de Kadgien cursaron en el colegio católico humanista San Gabriel de Vicente López, compartiendo aula con los hijos de familias tan antagónicas como la del escritor nacionalista vasco perseguido por el franquismo Andoni Astigarraga y la del vicealmirante Carlos Castro Madero, presidente de la Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA) durante todo el período de la última dictadura militar (1976-1983).
Tras la muerte del alemán, su viuda Hildegard Strauss vende la mansión de la calle Gaspar Campos 471, en Vicente López, “que parecía un museo”, y muda todos sus bienes 500 kilómetros al sur, a la estancia que su marido le había comprado a otro alemán, Karl Gustav Einckenberg, un espía de la Red Bolívar que reportaba al Sicherheitsdienst (SD), el departamento de espionaje de las Schutzstaffel.
La mudanza de la familia de Kadgien a la estancia El Porvenir, recuerda la misma fuente, la hizo el encargado del almacén La Estrella de San José: “Y trajo esos sillones que salen en la foto, abajo del cuadro”.
Cuando habla de la foto se refiere a la imagen que dio la vuelta al mundo en 2025, la del living de la casa que Patricia Kadgien tiene en el barrio Parque Luro de Mar del Plata, y que puso a la venta hace unos meses, mostrando, sin imaginar las consecuencias, colgado en la pared, el cuadro Retrato de dama, del italiano Giacomo Antonio Melchiorre Ceruti, una obra de arte robada por los nazis durante la ocupación en Holanda. El hallazgo del domicilio de una de las hijas de Kadgien, junto con el aviso de venta del chalet y el cuadro robado, colgado en la pared, le corresponde al periodista del diario neerlandés Algemeen Dagblad (AD), Peter Schouten.
Cuando se publicó la primicia, la policía allanó los domicilios marplatenses de las hermanas Kadgien buscando el famoso cuadro, que no apareció y, luego de unos días, tras una serie de allanamientos coordinados, fue el abogado de Patricia Kadgien, Carlos Murias, quien entregó la obra a la justicia.
Patricia Kadgien reconoció que el cuadro era una herencia de su papá. Estuvo en la mansión de Vicente López y en la estancia El Porvenir, y terminó colgado en Parque Luro. Investigadores del caso creen que la obra es apenas una muestra del botín que atesoró Kadgien durante su vida en Argentina.
“Lo primero que hizo Kadgien cuando Alemania ocupó Francia (el 10 de mayo de 1940) fue pedir los libros de los bancos parisinos para saber el nombre de los ciudadanos judíos que tenían empresas y acciones. Después de la guerra escapa a Suiza y vive en un hotel de lujo, hasta que es identificado como ss y vuelve a escapar. Ya en Sudamérica, vivió como un playboy en hoteles de Copacabana y compró una estancia en el Mato Grosso del tamaño de París. Llega a Buenos Aires en 1951 como un gran empresario que ayuda al desarrollo de la industria siderúrgica nacional por sus contactos con la naciente República Federal de Alemania”, explica Ariel Gelblung, director del centro Simon Wiesenthal, en una entrevista televisiva. Por supuesto, en la zona de Mar del Sud nadie conocía al viejo Kadgien como al nazi que había sido, no figuraba en el radar de los investigadores ni aparecía en los archivos desclasificados por el Estado argentino.
Cómo fue posible que el responsable de administrar las finanzas y los bienes culturales saqueados por los nazis en los territorios ocupados, principalmente joyas y obras de arte confiscadas a los judíos europeos masacrados durante el Holocausto, haya vivido en el país durante tres décadas, con su verdadero nombre y sin que nadie lo molestara nunca jamás, es la pregunta que todos se hacen.
Cientos de criminales nazis vivieron en la Argentina, desde el perverso Adolf Eichmann hasta el sádico Josef Mengele. Pero a Eichmann lo secuestró el Mossad y fue ahorcado en Israel condenado por crímenes contra la Humanidad, y Mengele, como muchos otros, si bien nunca fue capturado, huyó de Buenos Aires, primero a Paraguay y después a Brasil. Murió con una identidad falsa, nadando en el mar.
En cambio Kadgien andaba por Buenos Aires, entre Vicente López y Mar del Sud, a bordo de una rural Mercedes Benz con chofer. Se presentaba como empresario ligado a la industria del acero, las armas y el agro. Y mientras otros camaradas nazis huían, eran ejecutados o se cambiaban el nombre para sobrevivir en la clandestinidad, él era parte del círculo rojo y un selecto socio del Jockey Club, que grabó una medalla con su nombre castellanizado en 1963.
Pero hay algo de Kadgien que es más sorprendente todavía: que haya sido, como ha revelado este autor, el dueño de la estancia El Porvenir, un sitio señalado por los investigadores Julio B. Mutti y Laureano Clavero como centro de operaciones del espionaje nazi durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y una guarida segura para los alemanes que habrían desembarcado en la costa atlántica argentina tras la caída del Tercer Reich. Desde el satélite, la estancia El Porvenir demuestra su amplitud; el predio tiene un millar de hectáreas, un hipódromo y una pista de aterrizaje. La nomenclatura catastral del casco señala que está ubicada en el partido 33, en la circunscripción vi de Mar del Sud, fracción 35, partida inmobiliaria 44555. En los alrededores pueden verse algunas otras casas y más allá los característicos círculos verdes que se trazan sobre el terreno para regar los cultivos de papa.
La estancia El Porvenir tiene una larga historia más allá de haber sido el refugio del nazi Kadgien. Más acá en el tiempo perteneció a la familia Neuss, que donó una pequeña extensión de tierra al Opus Dei para la construcción de una casa de retiros espirituales a metros del mar. En el pueblo cuentan que el expresidente Carlos Menem conoció la estancia por dentro, invitado por su amigo Jorge Neuss.
Pero en los años cuarenta, antes que Kadgien y mucho antes que Neuss, El Porvenir perteneció a otro alemán: el espía Karl Gustav Einckenberg. Cuando Einckenberg fue descubierto por la Policía Federal, acusado de liderar una operación de desembarco nazi en las costas de Rocas Negras, se desprendió de la estancia y se refugió en Mar del Plata. Siempre se supo que la estancia de Mar del Sud fue vendida a otra familia alemana, pero nunca se había revelado su identidad. Esa familia, se sabe ahora tras esta investigación, fueron los Kadgien.
El relato de un paisano que asegura haber descubierto en esos campos el ingreso oculto a profundos túneles de hormigón que se dirigen hacia la ruta 88 toma ahora otra dimensión.
“La estancia El Porvenir es un lugar geográficamente perfecto para realizar un desembarco clandestino porque las tierras van desde la ruta 88 hasta la playa (si se suma la salida al mar de la estancia La Providencia, también propiedad de los alemanes). Existe un camino de 15 kilómetros que llega hasta el casco. En 2016 hablé con la hija de Gustav Eickenberg, Ingebor Gerike; ella recordó perfectamente sus años en la estancia El Porvenir durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, y cómo su padre iba a la confitería del Hotel Boulevard Atlántico con su auto Packard a reunirse con otros camaradas. Nombró, incluso, un encuentro en ese hotel en un día especial: la histórica nevada del 8 de julio de 1945”, cuenta Clavero. Los nazis y Mar del Sud son cosa seria. A veinte minutos del refugio seguro de Kadgien en la estancia El Porvenir, en una desolada playa conocida como El Remanso apareció, debajo de los cimientos de una casa abandonada, la lápida del tesorero del partido nazi argentino, el alemán Richard Schmidt.
Schmidt era constructor, se afilió al NSDAP el 1o de julio de 1932 y vivía en el barrio de Belgrano. Fue la mano derecha de Heinrich Volberg, el secretario de finanzas del partido nazi argentino, famoso por presionar a los empresarios alemanes de Buenos Aires para que hicieran aportes y despidieran a los empleados judíos de sus empresas.
Schmidt murió cinco años antes que Kadgien, en 1973, y nadie sabe cómo ni por qué su cenotafio terminó enterrado en una zona de campo a setenta metros del mar en la “casita de los alemanes”.
Esa propiedad tiene en el living un pequeño sótano al que se accede por una escotilla y, entre los libros de una biblioteca que contenía obras literarias publicadas en Berlín en 1935, el último propietario encontró una vieja postal, fechada el 26 de julio de 1984 en Camboriú, Santa Catarina, sur de Brasil. En el reverso de esa postal había unas líneas escritas en alemán, con letra cursiva y tinta azul, y al final podía leerse: “Estamos ligados a Mar del Sud, bendito Mar del Sud”.
Avistajes de submarinos, arte robado por los nazis decorando el living de una estancia y espías alemanes tomando café en la confitería del hotel Boulevard Atlántico, mientras dos submarinos de la Kriegsmarine están a punto de rendirse en el puerto de Mar del Plata, son demasiadas coincidencias en un solo lugar. El refugio perfecto de los nazis en fuga, y de su incalculable botín de guerra.
