Churchill, en su discurso del 4 de junio, declaró: «Vamos a luchar contra ellos en las playas», y describió a Dunkerque como «un milagro de liberación».
Fue reivindicado por la «Operación Overlord» el 6 de junio de 1944, cuando más de 160.000 tropas aliadas desembarcaron en las playas de Normandía en Francia, un día comunmente conocido como «Día D». Sin embargo, desde una perspectiva judía, el Día D llegó demasiado tarde.
Fue la batalla de Stalingrado, desde agosto de 1942 hasta febrero de 1943, seguida por el avance del Ejército Rojo en el Frente Oriental, en el que participaron más de 500.000 voluntarios judíos, reclutas y partidarios, lo que puso fin al plan de Hitler de invadir Gran Bretaña.
El Día D no impidió la deportación de 430.000 judíos húngaros, que perecieron en las cámaras de gas de Auschwitz durante 10 semanas entre mayo y julio de 1944.
De hecho, los preparativos para la invasión occidental fueron una excusa para no aplicar recursos para bombardear las vías ferroviarias conocidas a Auschwitz.
El fracaso más desconcertante en las 21 millas de defensa fueron los 12 judíos en las Islas del Canal, deportados por los alemanes hasta su muerte, desde el único territorio británico ocupado por los nazis. La colaboración de los administradores de las islas desencadenó escenarios aterradores de «qué pasaría si» para los judíos británicos, y Londres había sucumbido.
El 27 de enero de 2020, irónicamente el Día de Conmemoración del Holocausto de las Naciones Unidas, celebraremos el 75° aniversario de la liberación de Auschwitz por parte del Ejército Rojo Soviético, tres años después, en 1948, de la Guerra Fría, una larga sentencia de encarcelamiento para el judío soviético y establecimiento del Estado de Israel.
