El Ministerio de Exteriores confirmó que un ciudadano israelí, Eyal Baum, de 29 años, se encontraba en el avión Airbus A320 de la empresa Germanwings que se estrelló en los Alpes franceses entre Barcelonnette y Digne.
La familia de Baum se había contactado con el Ministerio de Exteriores, pidiéndole aclaración por la suerte de Baum que se suponía que había tomado el vuelo que despegó de Barcelona, España, donde residía. Antes de mudarse a Barcelona, Baum vívía en Hod Hasharón, en el centro de Israel. Baum se dirigía a Alemania por motivos de trabajo, y – según reportaron familiares- tenía pensado más tarde viajar a Israel para celebrar la festividad de Pesaj (la pascua judía).
El ministro francés del Interior, Bernard Cazeneuve, anunció que se encontró una de las cajas negras del avión, lo que podría ayudar a aclarar las circunstancias del siniestro.
El avión pertenecía a la línea de bajo costo Germanwings, subsidiaria de Lufthansa.
Un total de 144 pasajeros y seis miembros de la tripulación se encontraban en el aparato, que estaba volando desde Barcelona a Dusseldorf.
Tras alcanzar una altura de 38.000 pies, el avió comenzó a perder drásticamente altura durante ocho minutos, desapareciendo del radar.
A las 11.47 una señal de emergencia fue recibida del piloto.
