Se encontraron los cuerpos de 286 personas judías en un sótano debajo del mercado de la plaza del pueblo en Sataniv (Ucrania). En su mayoría eran mujeres y niños.
Se sabe que la ciudad tuvo una vez una comunidad judía organizada en la que vivieron numerosos pioneros del movimiento Haskalah. Entre ellos estaban Isaac Satanow, Menachem Mendel Lefin y Alexander b. Zevi Margaliot.
Después de sobrevivir a la persecución en la región durante siglos, los alemanes se infiltraron en mayo de 1942 y mataron a 800 personas. La mayoría de las cuales eran judíos.
De ellas, 286 fueron gaseadas en cámaras de gas en dos sótanos separados, según el Ynet News de Israel, citando los registros de la KGB así como los registros de testigos oculares de los que regresaron a la ciudad después de la guerra.

Los sótanos se abrieron después de la guerra, pero se dejaron abiertos sin mover los cuerpos con un cartel que lo marcaba como el lugar de un asesinato en masa. Con los años, sin embargo, la entrada desapareció bajo los escombros de una casa en ruinas que estaba encima.
A la comunidad judía local le costó varias batallas legales para obtener finalmente la propiedad del sótano. Las búsquedas comenzaron en el sitio en el 2019, y uno por uno, se encontraron huesos y prendas de vestir de los salvajemente asesinados. Entre los escombros había una mezuzah, que se encuentra en la entrada de las casas judías, lo que sugiere que las ruinas del sótano pertenecieron a una familia judía.
