Nuevos documentos desclasificados por el Vaticano, publicados en el marco de la apertura de los archivos del pontificado de Pio XII  (1939 a 1958). Muestra la preocupación de la Santa Sede por la situación de los judíos confinados en campos de concentración. También revelaron pedidos directos de la diplomacia vaticana para ayudar a la hoy senadora vitalicia italiana Liliana Segre, sobreviviente de Auschwitz.

Los nuevos documentos fueron analizados en el marco de la apertura de archivos del pontificado de Eugenio Pacelli. La misma se inició el 2 de marzo y revelan «cómo la actual senadora vitalicia y su padre Alberto, así como muchos otros judíos deportados por los nazis, fueron objeto de intervenciones humanitarias del Vaticano». Esto lo afirma Andrea Riccardi, presidente de la Comunidad San Egidio al diario Corriere della Sera.

Según las nuevas evidencias analizadas por Riccardi, un telegrama firmado el 23 de agosto de 1944 por el entonces secretario de Estado del Vaticano Giovanni Battista Montini, el luego papa Pablo VI, pidió directamente por la situación de Segre a través de la nunciatura apostólica en Berlín.

Según la reconstrucción de Riccardi, la familia de Segre había llegado a la cúpula del Vaticano a través de su tío, Dario Foligno.  Él se había convertido al catolicismo y también había sido ayudado por Montini en 1943.

Tras la intervención del Vaticano, la nunciatura en Berlín pidió directamente por Segre ante la cancillería alemana en septiembre de 1944.

La serie de pedidos vaticanos por Segre, agrega Riccardi, apareció junto a una carta de la época que confirma las intervenciones de la Santa Sede.  Se lamenta que el resto de los pedidos «no hayan surtido efecto» en el régimen nazi.

Estas son algunas de las nuevas evidencias de la intervención de la Santa Sede en favor de judíos perseguidos por el nazismo. Una hipótesis puesta en duda por algunos historiadores. Este material es parte de los documentos accesibles a investigadores desde la apertura de los archivos del pontificado de Pío XII. La misma ordenada por el papa Francisco el año pasado.

Hasta ahora, el Vaticano sólo accedió a abrir a los historiadores, en 2004, la «Inter Arma Caritas. Es la oficina de información vaticana para los prisioneros de guerra instituida por Pio XII (1939-1947)», un libro que recoge las fichas de 2.100.000 prisioneros de la II Guerra Mundial sobre los que se pidió información.
