Un grupo de investigación del Instituto Weizmann desarrolló una nueva tecnología que permite observar las funciones internas de las células.
Este nuevo método hace que los científicos establezcan distinciones más precisas entre los subtipos y las actividades de las células. Pueden ser cruciales cuando se trata de combatir el cáncer.
A su vez, esta podría ser una herramienta poderosa en el desarrollo de nuevos tratamientos de inmunoterapia para el cáncer.
La nueva técnica, llamada INs-seq (tinción y secuenciación intracelular), permite a los científicos medir proteínas, procesos y vías bioquímicas que ocurren dentro de las células.
El grupo encabezado por el profesor Ido Amit utilizó esta técnica para identificar nuevo subconjunto de células inmunitarias innatas que “colaboran” con el cáncer. El bloqueo de estas células en ratones mejoró en gran medida la respuesta inmune antitumoral, matando el cáncer.
Amit comparó los métodos existentes con la compra de sandías. Todas parecen idénticas desde el exterior, aunque pueden tener un sabor completamente diferente después de abrirlas.
Los científicos de Weizmann utilizaron su tecnología para abordar problemas que desafiaron a los investigadores durante años. El fracaso del sistema inmunológico para reconocer y destruir las células cancerosas y el fracaso de la inmunoterapia en el tratamiento de la mayoría de las clasificaciones de tumores.
El siguiente paso del grupo es desarrollar un tratamiento de inmunoterapia utilizando anticuerpos específicos para uso clínico. Amit está trabajando actualmente con Yeda Research and Development, la rama de transferencia de tecnología del Instituto Weizmann.
El estudiante de investigación Yonatan Katzenelenbogen dijo que “aclarar los mecanismos de las enfermedades autoinmunes y neurodegenerativas y responder a la pregunta de por qué el sistema inmunológico falla a menudo en su lucha contra el cáncer o por qué la mayoría de los pacientes no responden a la inmunoterapia existente puede deberse a acciones específicas de subconjuntos de células inmunitarias.
