Estados Unidos está trabajando para convocar una cumbre de paz en Medio Oriente en las próximas semanas.
Según le dijo un alto diplomático emiratí a Israel Hayom, la cumbre tendrá lugar en uno de los países del Golfo Pérsico.
Tras la visita de Mike Pompeo a Israel, EEUU intenta asegurar la participación de Bahréin, Omán, Marruecos, Sudán y Chad, junto con Israel y los Emiratos Árabes Unidos. El primer ministro Benjamín Netanyahu confía en que «más países seguirán el ejemplo de los EAU».
A su vez, el viaje de cinco días de Pompeo a Medio Oriente y África es parte del esfuerzo de Washington para sentar las bases de la cumbre de paz. La misma se llevará a cabo en uno de los países del Golfo Pérsico.
Arabia Saudita, Egipto y Jordania (los dos últimos ya tienen tratados de paz con Israel), aún no confirmaron su participación.
El diplomático afirmó que antes y durante la visita de Pompeo a Israel, los funcionarios palestinos fueron invitados. El mensaje también se transmitió a la Autoridad Palestina (AP), de que el secretario estadounidense está dispuesto a visitar a su presidente, Mahmoud Abbas, en Ramallah. Iría a invitarlo personalmente a la cumbre.
Pero Abbas y otros funcionarios de la AP rechazaron la propuesta. «Incluso enviaron el mensaje de que no se reciba a Pompeo en Ramallah», manifestó el funcionario emiratí.
«La posición palestina es muy triste. Se les dio la oportunidad de reducir la situación con una respetuosa invitación a participar en una conferencia regional de paz y la rechazaron de plano sin una explicación razonable», señaló.
