El Ayuntamiento de Nueva York amenazó con cerrar una sinagoga del distrito de Brooklyn si vuelve a desafiar las normas para frenar el coronavirus. Fue después que saliese a la luz que el templo celebró un funeral de un rabino con miles de asistentes.

Según desveló el diario The New York Post, hasta 5.000 personas se reunieron el lunes en la sinagoga Yetev Lev D’Satmar. Está situada en el vecindario de Williamsburg, uno de los principales enclaves ultraortodoxos de la ciudad.

En fotografías publicadas por el tabloide puede verse a una gran multitud de hombres en las inmediaciones del templo. En su gran mayoría sin mascarillas y sin observar ningún tipo de distancia.

Las autoridades ya habían vetado el pasado octubre la celebración de una boda en esa misma sinagoga.

Preguntado en una conferencia de prensa, el alcalde, Bill de Blasio, aseguró que este último episodio está siendo investigado. El Ayuntamiento va a contactarse con los líderes de la comunidad ultraortodoxa judía para reiterar la necesidad de que se respeten las medidas para combatir la covid-19, en un momento en el que los casos vuelven a subir en Nueva York.

«Si vemos que se confirma otra situación en la que hay un evento inapropiado en el mismo edificio, vamos a tener que cerrarlo de una vez por todas. Algo que nadie quiere», señaló De Blasio.

El alcalde reiteró que las grandes reuniones de este tipo suponen una gran preocupación y deben respetar las normas o no celebrarse.

Además de requerir el uso de mascarillas y el respeto de la distancia entre personas, las normas en Nueva York tienen actualmente límites al aforo de los templos religiosos.

Tras ser golpeados con dureza durante la primera ola del virus, varios barrios con gran presencia de ultraortodoxos registraron en septiembre un fuerte aumento de casos. Esto obligó a las autoridades a imponer medidas adicionales en esas zonas.

De Blasio recordó que, en ese caso, la cooperación de la comunidad fue muy buena para aumentar el número de pruebas de diagnóstico y conseguir frenar brotes.
