La Liga Anti-Difamación (ADL) publicó un informe el 29 de abril destacando los esfuerzos en las redes sociales para que las comunidades haredíes y judías ortodoxas sean los chivos expiatorios de la pandemia COVID-19.

El informe explica que hay comentarios en Facebook que acusan a todos los judíos haredíes y ortodoxos de ignorar las medidas de distanciamiento social y propagar el virus. También hay publicaciones que piden que estén aisladas de todos los demás.

Un comentario de Facebook citado en el informe dice: «A ellos realmente no les importan nadie más que a sí mismos, y es hora de contener por la fuerza a estas personas».

Otras publicaciones abogan por que se niegue el tratamiento médico a los judíos haredí y ortodoxos; El informe cita un comentario de Facebook que dice: «¿Por qué estamos desperdiciando pruebas y suministros médicos en una comunidad que se niega a seguir las reglas?» Según el informe, algunas publicaciones pedían que «los funcionarios encargados de hacer cumplir la ley usen mangueras de agua y gases lacrimógenos para evitar que los miembros de la comunidad ortodoxa y haredi se reúnan», así como comparar a los rabinos de esta comunidades con Adolf Hitler.

El informe afirma que tales publicaciones se pueden encontrar en «grupos de Facebook de la comunidad mayoritaria que pretenden discutir temas de política pública, pero en cambio se transforman rápidamente en foros que permiten el odio a los judíos, tanto velados como abiertos». Los políticos también participan en estos foros y no condenan estos comentarios antisemitas, lo que permite que continúe el antisemitismo, según el informe.

El informe reconoce que aunque algunos miembros de las comunidades Haredí y ortodoxa han alardeado de las medidas de distanciamiento social pero la inmensa mayoría ha seguido estas medidas.

«Estas aberraciones no son exclusivas de las comunidades haredi u ortodoxas», señala el informe. “Sin embargo, y como es el caso con demasiada frecuencia, los malos actos de unos pocos se han atribuido ampliamente a toda una comunidad, lo que lleva a muchos a concluir que la comunidad ortodoxa en su conjunto no está cumpliendo colectivamente con las directivas de salud pública y, por lo tanto, es responsable por intentar imprudentemente o incluso intencionalmente propagar COVID-19, una acusación falsa y alarmante que recuerda a los antiguos tropos antisemitas que culpan a los judíos por propagar la suciedad y la peste «.

El informe se produce después de que el alcalde de la ciudad de Nueva York, Bill de Blasio, tuiteó en respuesta a una gran reunión fúnebre para un rabino que murió por complicaciones de COVID-19: «Mi mensaje para la comunidad judía y todas las comunidades es así de simple: el momento de las advertencias ha pasado. He ordenado a la policía de Nueva York que proceda de inmediato a convocar o incluso arrestar a los que se reúnen en grandes grupos «. Los videos de la procesión fúnebre mostraron a miles de personas que no seguían las pautas de distanciamiento social.
