Un año y ocho meses después de que la nave espacial israelí «Bereshit» no pudiera alunizar, Israel anunció el lanzamiento del programa “Bereshit II”. Busca enviar su misión a la luna en el año 2024.
El anuncio tuvo lugar en la Residencia Presidencial en Jerusalem y contó con la participación del presidente Reuven Rivlin, el ministro de Ciencia y Tecnología Yizhar Shai, el director ejecutivo de la Industria Aeroespacial de Israel (IAI), Boaz Levy, y los fundadores de SpaceIL, Kfir Dimri y Yariv Bash. Al igual que la nave espacial lanzada en 2019, «Beresheet II» también será construida por la IAI.

Cuando se dio por finalizado el programa “Beresheet”, los directivos de SpaceIL, una organización israelí sin fines de lucro que tiene como objetivo promover la educación en torno a la exploración del espacio, decidieron que era apropiado dar continuidad al efecto que se había generado y comenzar a pensar en su continuidad. Así surgió “Beresheet II”.

La misión constará de una nave principal compuesta por tres partes secundarias, una sonda y dos naves de alunizaje. Las naves de alunizaje descenderán sobre la superficie de la luna en lugares y momentos distintos para realizar diversos experimentos científicos. La sonda se mantendrá en órbita alrededor de la luna durante varios años con el fin de realizar experimentos y trabajos educativos que servirán para los estudiantes de Israel y de todo el mundo.

SpaceIL expresó que espera que esta misión sea de carácter multinacional y liderada por Israel. Los alumnos y estudiantes de los países socios del proyecto tendrán acceso al espacio profundo. Además, explorarán la información procedente de la nave espacial en órbita. También avanzarán en la investigación y en los experimentos en el espacio.

Se espera que la nave espacial tenga un peso total de 630 kg. en tierra. Cada uno de los módulos de descenso pesará unos 120 kg antes de alunizar. El presupuesto del proyecto se estima en unos 100 millones de dólares. La mitad del cual proviene de colaboraciones internacionales, cuya recaudación estará a cargo de la Agencia Espacial Israelí (ISA, por sus siglas en inglés) del Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología. La parte restante se recaudará en base a patrocinios privados y filántropos.

El presidente Reuven Rivlin señaló que «el viaje de ‘Beresheet II’ al espacio es único. Si tiene éxito, y estoy seguro de que lo tendrá, nos ayudará a comprender mejor el universo en el que vivimos». Y agregó: «El lanzamiento de esta nueva misión es un evento histórico. Una oportunidad para recordarnos nuestra responsabilidad, la de los seres humanos que habitamos la Tierra, para con nuestro planeta»

El Ministro de Ciencia y Tecnología, Yizhar Shai, señaló durante el anuncio: “Se trata de un proyecto innovador e inspirador. En las conversaciones llevadas a cabo por la Agencia Espacial de Israel, siete países de cinco continentes manifestaron su interés en participar del proyecto. Incluso en conversaciones con Emiratos Árabes Unidos, el tema fue parte de la agenda».
