El país europeo organizó actividades por 1700 años de presencia judía en sus tierras. A pesar del recuerdo del nazismo, se habla de “un futuro en común”.

El rapero Ben Salomo nació en 1977 en la ciudad israelí de Rejovot, pero creció en Berlín, en el seno de una familia rumano-ucraniana de origen judío que se estableció en Alemania cuando él tenía cuatro años. Sus abuelos maternos llegaron antes, probablemente atraídos por las políticas sociales del Estado que décadas atrás había perpetrado el mayor genocidio cometido contra su pueblo.

Siendo un niño Ben Salomo sintió la rareza de concurrir a una escuela con custodia policial. Ya en la pubertad, sintió la discriminación de sus pares, en ocasiones jóvenes de familias migrantes turcas y árabes.

La de Ben Salomo es una de las voces presentadas en el lanzamiento virtual de 321-2021: 1700 años de vida judía en Alemania, todo un año de actividades que no solo busca mirar al pasado sino visibilizar la vida judía actual. En un videoclip que integra la programación y que fue hecho con motivo del aniversario del ataque a la sinagoga de Halle de 2019, el rapero le canta a su abuelo: “Dedushka, confiaste en ellos, pero la confianza me fue robada. A pesar de todo, acá estoy en casa”. Para después rapear: “1700 años en esta casa, y nunca estuviste en casa”.

La ambivalencia es el sentimiento que atraviesa a los jóvenes de origen judío en Alemania, donde actualmente “un 20% de la población tiene ideas antisemitas”, como informa Andrei Kovacs, director ejecutivo de la asociación encargada de organizar el concurso público que dio lugar a la programación descentralizada y de administrar los fondos estatales que la solventan. Kovacs precisa que “se escucha que el problema son los inmigrantes, pero son alemanes ultraderechistas los autores de atentados como el de Halle (el intento de asesinato masivo durante la festividad judía de Iom Kipur, el Día del Perdón) o el de Hanau (donde murieron nueve ciudadanos de origen extranjero)”.

El objetivo de la iniciativa es promover la empatía “porque solo así podremos derrumbar estereotipos y mitos conspirativos, y detener el antisemitismo latente”. Y dar la voz a los jóvenes, como a Nathan (13), que en el lanzamiento virtual pide “que a los judíos se nos acepte como somos, porque soy una persona común y corriente”. “Los jóvenes judíos quieren hacerse oír y a la vez vivir con normalidad”, explica Kovacs, de 46 años y padre de tres hijos. De origen judío húngaro, su familia se radicó en Colonia cuando era chico; sus abuelos fueron sobrevivientes del gueto de Budapest y del campo de concentración de Bergen-Belsen (el mismo en que murió Ana Frank).

Una historia de vicisitudes

Un edicto del emperador romano Constantino I del año 321 se considera la más antigua evidencia escrita de vida judía en el centro y norte europeo. Sobre todo en lo que hoy es Alemania. Los miembros de la curia de la ciudad de Colonia habían solicitado que se permitiera la incorporación de judíos en ese concejo municipal, cosa que el emperador autorizó con fuerza de ley y para todo el Imperio. Esto atestigua que personas judías eran parte de la sociedad romana. Pero lo interesante es que poder ser nombrado en ese órgano estaba lejos de ser una prerrogativa: “Sus miembros se ocupaban de recaudar impuestos y respondían con su fortuna personal, en realidad se les estaba quitando a judíos ricos el privilegio de no tener que hacerlo”.

Los judíos llegaron a la zona del Rin de la mano de las legiones hace más de 1700 años, muchísimo antes que Alemania existiera como tal. Sin embargo, “es una historia compleja, de pogroms, persecución por parte de la iglesia cristiana, antijudaísmo y más tarde antisemitismo.

También hubo periodos de florecimiento de la vida judía. Como el que se dio a partir de la Ilustración, la etapa de los grandes literatos, de compositores como Felix Mendelssohn o personalidades de la ciencia. Pero por desgracia el hilo conductor es el antijudaísmo y el antisemitismo.

“A comienzos del siglo XX vivían en territorio alemán unos 500.000 judíos, pero con la Shoá la vida judía fue exterminada. Se calcula que en Alemania había apenas 16.000 judíos cuando terminó la guerra y hoy hay muy pocos judíos alemanes aquí. La comunidad judía se compone en un noventa por ciento de judíos provenientes de la antigua Unión Soviética que llegaron hacia fines de los 90 y comienzos de los 2000 por las políticas de acogida del Estado alemán. Al principio no fue fácil porque muchos no hablaban alemán, pero entretanto sus hijos nacidos aquí ni siquiera hablan ruso. Se calcula que hoy viven unos 150.000 judíos en Alemania”, detalla Kovacs.

El cuadro se completa con cada vez más jóvenes israelíes que se establecen en este país. Como Yoav Bosidan, un bailarín estable de la Deutsche Oper am Rhein que asegura sentirse muy a gusto y querer quedarse. “De hecho, Alemania es el único país de Europa en el que la población judía está creciendo. Frente al éxodo masivo de judíos que emigran del resto del continente a Norteamérica o Israel. El antisemitismo no es exclusivo de Alemania, es un problema europeo y probablemente mundial”, aclara Kovacs.

Un futuro en común

450 instituciones entre museos, teatros, clubes y asociaciones civiles llevan adelante unas 1000 propuestas presenciales y online. Algunas estarán subtituladas o ya están disponibles en inglés, como la muestra virtual Shared History – 1700 Years of Jewish Life in German-speaking Lands (Historia compartida: 1700 años de vida judía en tierras de habla alemana) del Instituto Leo Baeck.

Kovacs destaca una festividad, Sucot XXL, que será “la más grande del mundo” y convocará al conjunto de la sociedad. “Cuando llega al barrio un vecino nuevo, podemos hacer una visita guiada por la sinagoga o podemos invitarlo a tomar una copa de vino, a este último tipo de encuentro entre personas judías y no judías aspiramos”, dice.

“Hasta ahora -sostiene Kovacs- se miró sobre todo hacia el pasado, algo que es importantísimo porque la Shoá es el mayor delito que se haya cometido contra la humanidad: criminal, pérfido, psicótico; siempre formará parte de la sociedad alemana y será responsabilidad de todas nuestras generaciones recordarla para garantizar que no se repita. Pero los judíos alemanes no somos piezas de museo, no estamos muertos, estamos vivos, no se puede hablar con nosotros todo el tiempo solo de la muerte. Queremos mirar al futuro y esa es la misión de esta asociación que no es judía ni no judía: aprender del pasado pero vivir en el presente y construir un futuro común. Y un futuro no se construye sobre la base exclusiva de las lágrimas, debemos encontrar impulsos positivos para nuestros hijos”.

El antisemitismo no es exclusivo de Alemania, es un problema europeo y probablemente mundial

Para Kovacs, es un error creer que celebrar la vida judía sea borrar el pasado. “Creo que a raíz del sentimiento de responsabilidad con el que carga, la sociedad alemana se ha esforzado en hacer mucho por la vida judía. Y lo digo como judío”.

Max Czollek es un joven poeta y politólogo, judío y berlinés. En su libro Desintegriert euch! (“¡Desintégrense!”) propone dejar atrás eufemismos como la “integración” en pos de un nuevo pensamiento político que reconozca la “diversidad radical” de la sociedad alemana actual. “Él señala justamente que la sociedad alemana ha entrado en una rutina meramente conmemorativa y lo que necesitamos es dar cabida a la diversidad”, dice Kovacs.

Sobre House of One, el primer templo multiconfesional del mundo que reunirá bajo un mismo techo los cultos judío, cristiano y musulmán y cuya piedra fundacional será colocada en Berlín el 27 de mayo de este año, concluye: “No conozco de cerca el proyecto. Está muy bien como gesto simbólico en una ciudad como Berlín, pero se necesita más. El judaísmo es judaísmo porque no es multiconfesional. Además la vida judía va más allá de la religión. Hay judíos ateos, liberales y ortodoxos, de izquierda y de derecha, hay de todo como en todos lados, de lo que se trata es de pluralismo y de encuentro real entre las personas.”
