Pesaj es conocida como «la fiesta de la libertad», por la salida de los israelitas de la esclavitud del Egipto faraónico hace unos 3.300 años. Sin embargo, no usamos hoy dicha independencia como excusa para saltarnos las normas sociales (como en el carnaval). Sino como un compromiso para recordar lo narrado (el libro que se lee durante la cena, la Hagadá, quiere decir narración), en familia, en cada generación, autoimponiéndonos algunas de las limitaciones que sufrieron entonces (como la falta de leudantes para fabricar pan). Así vivenciamos el precio que hubo de pagar para poder actuar como un mismo pueblo, y no como una colección de tribus y clanes acostumbrados a que otros decidan su destino.

Del relato bíblico del Éxodo se desprende que la libertad no es un bien que se posee, sino que debe aprenderse. Como la naturaleza aprende a renacer cada primavera cuando se ha librado del Egipto del invierno. Cada uno de nosotros es responsable en buena medida de los barrotes que nos mantienen sometidos. Pero, a la vez, dentro de cada cual hay un Moisés, un salvador (paradójicamente, él mismo un salvado de las aguas, que es lo significa su nombre), capaz de renunciar a los beneficios de la pasividad y delegación del ser para asumir los compromisos e inclemencias de la libertad. Una vez dispuesto a echarse al desierto y vagar sin rumbo aparente hasta que nuestras mentes y corazones estén dispuestos a asumir las consecuencias de nuestros actos. Hasta que aprendamos a ser libres.

Solemos confundir este concepto con simplemente salir del encierro. La mayoría de las veces nos pasa como con los animales criados en cautividad: no sabemos sobrevivir en la intemperie y pronto entramos a servir a un nuevo amo. Por miedo a ejercer la libertad, el principal y más antiguo de los derechos. Aquel que nos fue otorgado a los seres humanos cuando fuimos expulsados del Edén. Llevar las riendas de nuestro propio destino, aunque éstas nos hieran las manos y el polvo del camino nos ciegue por momentos.

No por casualidad estos avatares ocupan cuatro quintas partes del Pentateuco, la Torá, el corazón del judaísmo. De modo análogo a los 40 años que los israelitas tardaron en atravesar una distancia transitable en pocos días hasta llegar a la tierra que se vieron obligados por el hambre a dejar durante 210 años. Nosotros también hoy caminamos por sendas desconocidas. Tratando de retornar a la normalidad perdida antes de la última plaga, intentando aprender cómo gestionar la vida a partir de ahora, cómo volver a ser libres.
