El documental, que ganó el Oscar a la mejor película documental en 1998, cuenta las historias de cinco judíos húngaros que sobrevivieron al Holocausto. Uno fue Tom Lantos, quien se convertiría en congresista de California de 1981 a 2008.
La película sigue a los sobrevivientes después de la guerra cuando regresan a sus lugares de origen, visitan los guetos y campos de concentración donde estuvieron encarcelados.

La película reúne los testimonios de cinco judíos húngaros que sufrieron la persecución nazi durante 1944 y 1945. En esos años, Hitler, a pesar de tener casi perdida la guerra, aceleró incomprensiblemente la Solución Final, debilitando incluso su potencial militar. Los protagonistas viven desde hace años en Estados Unidos. Son un congresista, una artista, una profesora, un hombre de negocios y un ama de casa.
A sus emotivos recuerdos -reavivados en sus visitas a Hungría y a varios campos de exterminio en Alemania y Polonia-, se añaden los de otros implicados. Casos como un experto en el Holocausto, tres de los soldados estadounidenses que liberaron Dachau o un evasivo ex nazi, médico en Auschwitz y que fue absuelto en los juicios de Nuremberg.
