Israel fue elegido por primera vez para servir como miembro del Consejo Económico y Social de la ONU (ECOSOC), compuesto por 54 naciones.

El embajador ante las Naciones Unidas, Gilad Erdan, elogia la votación como “un reconocimiento a nuestra innovación y creatividad”.

Más de dos tercios de los estados miembros de la ONU (154 países) apoyaron la propuesta de Israel de unirse al Consejo Económico del organismo.

“Elegir a Israel para formar parte del ECOSOC es un reconocimiento a nuestra innovación y creatividad. Sirve para beneficiar a todas las naciones del mundo, así como una prueba de nuestros esfuerzos diplomáticos en toda la comunidad internacional”, dijo Erdan luego de votar. “Seguiré dirigiendo al Estado de Israel hacia mayores logros y expandiendo los esfuerzos de cooperación en la ONU, a pesar de los esfuerzos de los palestinos y sus partidarios”, agregó.

Los escaños en el ECOSOC se asignan sobre la base de la representación geográfica. Son 14 escaños para los estados africanos; 13 para los estados de Europa occidental; 11 para los estados de Asia y el Pacífico; 10 para los estados de América Latina y el Caribe; y seis para los estados de Europa del Este.

A su vez, las naciones son elegidas para el cuerpo por períodos superpuestos de tres años. En total, esta semana se eligió a 18 nuevos estados para formar parte del ECOSOC, y comenzarán sus mandatos el 1 de enero de 2022.

Erdan dijo que la elección de Israel para el organismo, “después de la operación en Gaza y de las difíciles actividades diplomáticas aquí por parte de los palestinos y sus partidarios”, demuestra que todavía se considera a Israel como una valiosa adición al consejo.

A fines del mes pasado, el Consejo de Derechos Humanos de la ONU votó para crear una investigación internacional abierta sobre el trato de Israel a los palestinos, luego de que el jefe de derechos de la ONU dijera que las fuerzas israelíes podrían haber cometido crímenes de guerra en el conflicto con Hamás.

La resolución, aprobada por 24 votos contra 9 y 14 abstenciones, pidió la creación de una “Comisión de Investigación” permanente. Se trata de la herramienta más potente a disposición del consejo para monitorear e informar sobre las violaciones de derechos.
