Un turco fue condenado por decirle en Facebook al presidente, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, «judío que se hace pasar por musulmán».

Inicialmente encarcelaron a Yüksel Üstün por violar una ley que tipifica como delito insultar el “honor, orgullo y respetabilidad” del presidente. Los abogados de Erdogan argumentaron que era «menosprecio» describirlo como judío.

La condena, por su parte, se produjo a pesar de que el abogado de Üstün, Baran Güneş, objetó que el comentario no podía ser un insulto.

“Los judíos son ciudadanos honorables de este país. No es un crimen llamar a alguien gitano o judío ”, dijo al tribunal, según Deutsche Welle.

Pero los jueces primero le dieron a Üstün una pena de prisión de 10 meses, antes de reducir la sentencia a una multa de 7.000 liras turcas (£ 535).

Insultar al presidente es un delito de larga data en Turquía. Pero Erdogan, elegido por primera vez para el cargo en 2014, tiene la reputación de ser excepcionalmente litigioso.

Luego de este episodio, en el que a Erdogan lo llamaron «judío que se hace pasar por musulmán», reapareció un estudio de agosto de 2021 realizado por el opositor Partido Republicano del Pueblo (CHP), que encontró que el mandatario inició 38.581 casos por difamación en los tribunales en sus primeros seis años en el cargo. Solo se presentaron 1.138 casos en la década anterior, según el informe.

Un usuario de Twitter, además, comentó: «¿No pueden nuestros ciudadanos judíos lanzar un caso de difamación propio sobre la base de que se trata de un acto de difamación en su contra?»

Actualmente hay alrededor de 20.000 judíos viviendo en Turquía, la mayoría en la ciudad más grande del país, Estambul.
