Hawila fue noticia este mes después de que se descubriera que había mentido sobre su herencia judía y que, de hecho, no era judío cuando se casó con una mujer judía sefardí en Brooklyn.

Nacido en el seno de una familia musulmana chiíta en el Líbano, Hawila dijo que nunca se sintió vinculado al Islam, y que era muy secular, sin asistir nunca a los servicios de la mezquita.
“No creo en el Islam”, dijo. “No es mi religión”.
Después de que sus padres se separaran y su padre, ciudadano estadounidense, se trasladara a EE.UU., Hawila abandonó el Líbano, tras graduarse en el instituto.
Antes de trasladarse a Estados Unidos, instalándose finalmente en Texas, Hawila dijo que se interesó por el judaísmo, leyendo sobre la religión y aprendiendo hebreo a partir de 2014.
Hawila afirmó que recibió amenazas de su padre y que tuvo que ocultar su interés por el judaísmo.
Después de mudarse a Texas, Hawila dijo que se puso en contacto con una congregación reformista, pero no recibió respuesta. En ese momento, Hawila afirma que empezó a hacerse pasar por judío.
Mientras estudiaba en la Universidad de Texas A&M, Hawila asistió a la Casa Hillel local, afirmando que era judío.
Más tarde, cuando empezó a visitar un centro local de Chabad, le preguntaron si su madre era judía y respondió que sí.

El engaño continuó hasta una semana después de la boda. Fue ahí cuando el padre de la novia empezó a buscar exhaustivamente en Internet más información sobre su nuevo yerno, descubriendo su verdadera identidad.
“Se volvieron locos”, dijo Hawila. “Quería tapar las cosas, así que mentía cada vez más”.
“Tenía miedo de que me la quitaran, por fin estoy viviendo una vida judía. Es el amor de mi vida y me la van a quitar”.
Hawila expresó su remordimiento por haber engañado a la novia y a su familia; “Le pediré perdón el resto de mi vida y le rogaré una segunda oportunidad”.
