Precisamente, el campo de Sachsenhausen, de las afueras de Berlín, fue el escenario de la brutalidad sin límites del régimen nazi entre 1942 y 1945. El juez Udo Lechtermann señaló en su veredicto que el ex guardia nazi de 102 años contribuyó al sistema asesino establecido por los nazis y fue testigo de las torturas y los asesinatos diarios, durante tres años, de personas inocentes en el campo de concentración.
Además, el caso de Josef S. es un ejemplo de cómo la justicia sigue persiguiendo a aquellos que colaboraron en los crímenes del Holocausto. Un precedente legal de 2015 permite que cualquiera que contribuyó al funcionamiento de un campo nazi se lo procese en Alemania por ser cómplice de los asesinatos que se cometieron allí.
