El presidente de Chipre, Nicos Anastasiades, realizó una rápida visita a Israel motivada por las preocupaciones sobre el acuerdo de reconciliación alcanzado recientemente entre el Estado judío y Turquía, y para discutir un gasoducto cuyo trayecto partirá desde las aguas israelíes hacia la costa turca, pasando a través de la zona económica exclusiva chipriota.
El presidente Anastasiades llegó acompañado por los ministros de Energía y Exteriores de Chipre.
Los funcionarios de Jerusalén se manifestaron sorprendidos por el cambio de postura de Chipre con respecto al gasoducto. Los funcionarios creen que el gobierno chipriota se siente presionado tanto por la opinión pública local como por el fallido golpe de Estado en Turquía, y quiere asegurarse que los intereses y las relaciones de Chipre sean tenidos en cuenta.
Netanyahu logró disipar los temores de Anastasiades trasmitiéndole que Israel no tiene ninguna intención de dañar los intereses comunes entre Israel y Chipre, y que el Estado judío hará todo lo que pueda para coordinar las políticas con la isla mediterránea.
La parte israelí también destacó que en el derecho internacional no existe ningún mecanismo de veto para la construcción de un gasoducto a través de las zonas económicas exclusivas, y que sólo hay mecanismos de coordinación –algo que ya existe entre Israel y Chipre-. Mientras tanto, los chipriotas explicaron que no tienen intenciones de dar marcha atrás con respecto a los acuerdos de cooperación.
Ambos líderes publicaron una declaración conjunta al final de la reunión, postulando que, si bien hubo algunas turbulencias en las relaciones en los últimos días, los desacuerdos se han resulto, y todo ha vuelto a la normalidad.
