Durante la reunión del Gabinete de Seguridad, el primer ministro de Israel, Benjamín Netanyahu, manifestó que no reconocerá ni aceptará el acuerdo de reconciliación entre el movimiento Fatah y grupo terrorista islámico Hamás, pero que tampoco impedirá su implementación ni romperá las relaciones con la Autoridad Palestina (AP).
Según el diario Haaretz, Netanyahu le dijo a los miembros del exclusivo Gabinete que si el acuerdo es implementado y miembros de la AP regresan al gobierno civil de Gaza y al control de los pasos fronterizos del enclave costero, Israel debería cooperar con ellos porque sirve a los intereses del Estado en prevenir una crisis humanitaria y mejorar las condiciones de vida en la Franja.
Sin embargo, Netanyahu aclaró a Egipto y a Estados Unidos que el acuerdo no cambia nada para Israel con respecto a las negociaciones con los palestinos. El primer ministro agregó que le ha dicho a El Cairo y Washington que rechaza el argumento según el cual la reconciliación, al poner al presidente palestino, Mahmud Abbás, a cargo de la Franja de Gaza y Cisjordania, facilitará las conversaciones entre Israel y los palestinos.
Un alto funcionario norteamericano expresó que la Administración Trump está siguiendo de cerca la implementación del acuerdo de reconciliación y que se mantiene en contacto con Egipto, Israel y los palestinos.
El Gabinete de Seguridad se vuelve a reunir hoy sobre el tema, para permitirles a todos sus miembros la oportunidad de hablar.
El ministro de Educación, Naftalí Bennett, ha afirmado que Israel debería cortar los lazos con la AP. Pero la inclinación general dentro del Gabinete de Seguridad es adoptar la posición de Netanyahu y continuar con la coordinación con la AP.
La actitud de Netanyahu difiere con el enfoque adoptado con respecto al acuerdo de reconciliación alcanzado por Fatah y Hamás, en 2014; cuando el Gabinete de Seguridad resolvió congelar las negociaciones con los palestinos y cortar los contactos de los ministros israelíes con sus homólogos palestinos.
La Oficina del Primer Ministro se ha abstenido de atacar el acuerdo actual y ha dicho con un tono diplomático que “Israel monitoreará los acontecimientos sobre el terreno y actuará en consecuencia”. La Oficina añade que Israel se opone a cualquier reconciliación que no cumpla con los acuerdos internacionales y las condiciones del Cuarteto de Paz para Oriente Medio, esto es: “Ante todo… reconocer a Israel y desarmar a Hamas”.
