Familiares de víctimas del ataque contra la Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) en 1994 pidieron 6 años de cárcel para el expresidente Carlos Menem, acusado de desviar la investigación para desestimar una «pista siria» que involucraba a allegados suyos, informó la organización Memoria Activa. En su alegato final, los abogados de esta entidad reclamaron al tribunal también 4 años y 8 meses de prisión para Rubén Beraja, un extitular de la DAIA, por considerar que actuó en complicidad con Menem, según un comunicado de prensa.
La bomba destruyó el edificio de la AMIA y la DAIA. Fue el atentado más grave de la historia argentina después del perpetrado contra la embajada de Israel, en 1992. En el balance global, murieron 115 personas y 500 fueron heridas. El juicio lleva casi tres años de audiencias orales y no se conoce aún la fecha de las sentencias. Otro juez argentino, Rodolfo Canicoba Corral, asegura que los responsables del ataque fueron ex gobernantes iraníes.
«El principal sospechoso era el ya fallecido Alberto Kanoore Edul, un empresario descendiente de sirios, como Menem y cercano al ex mandatario. Por consejo del gobierno, el entonces juez del caso, Juan Galeano, dejó la «pista siria» e inició la «pista iraní». Las pruebas presentadas por Memoria Activa demostraron el desvío de la llamada ‘pista siria’, la cual tenía a un amigo del ex presidente Menem como sospechoso», dijo la organización que nuclea también a personalidades de la colectividad con más de 300.000 miembros.
Memoria Activa y la fiscalía dijeron haber probado en el juicio que el servicio de inteligencia del gobierno le dio al juez unos 400.000 dólares para pagarle a un soplón de la policía, Carlos Telleldín, para que acusara de poner la bomba a «culpables falsos», unos policías bonaerenses. Galeano fue destituido del puesto en 2005 y Memoria Activa pidió el jueves para él, la pena mayor, de 20 años de cárcel. Además reclamó condenas de 3 a 15 años para exfuncionarios de Menem, exfuncionarios judiciales y una decena de involucrados.
