El ministro de Infraestructura, Energía y Agua y miembro del gabinete de seguridad, Yuval Steinitz, señaló la necesidad de que su país incremente su capacidad defensiva (fundamentalmente con ayudas de EEUU), a raíz de la creciente construcción de la capacidad militar iraní.
«Está claro que cuando se mira a Oriente Medio, es más peligroso, más inestable que nunca y existen nuevas amenazas para la pequeña democracia judía del Estado de Israel», manifestó el ministro, antiguo titular de Asuntos Estratégicos e Inteligencia, en Jerusalén.
Steinitz hizo un repaso a la inestabilidad regional y puso el acento en Irán, respecto al que, señaló «hay dos nuevos fenómenos que preocupan especialmente».
El primero «es el aumento masivo de la capacidad militar iraní» después de conocerse que «Rusia les va a proveer de misiles antiaéreos S-300», señaló.
Esos misiles «son los mejores de larga distancia en el mundo y hasta ahora no se suministraban a Irán».
En segundo lugar puso de relieve lo que calificó de «presencia terrestre directa iraní en Siria, lo que preocupa mucho» a Israel.
Sin entrar en cifras -expertos señalan que Israel aspira a alcanzar ayudas militares por valor de 5.000 millones de dólares de EEUU- Steinitz incidió en que «es muy clara la necesidad de aumentar la cooperación en materia de Defensa e incrementar (el poder de) disuasión de Israel respecto al mundo árabe».
El primer ministro, Biniamín Netanyahu, se entrevistó en la Casa Blanca con el presidente estadounidense, Barack Obama, con quien analizó la relación bilateral y la situación regional, en el primer encuentro entre ambos tras el acuerdo nuclear alcanzado este año entre las potencias mundiales y Teherán.
Una de las cuestiones fundamentales del encuentro fue la renovación del pacto de seguridad por el que Washington entrega a Israel más de 3.000 millones de dólares de ayuda al año, confirmó Steinitz.
Respecto a la situación en Siria, el ministro declaró que su Gobierno «siempre ha considerado a Irán parte del problema» y reiteró la posición de Israel de que cualquier solución en el país vecino debe pasar porque «Siria no se convierta en una extensión de Irán».
«Nadie quiere ver bases navales iraníes en el Mediterráneo», insistió.
También defendió que la seguridad de Israel debe ser condición sine qua non en cualquier solución al conflicto en territorio sirio que negocian varios países en Viena.
